RIDERS FACING DOUBLE TROUBLE AT MADSEN TESTIMONIAL

RIDERS competing in Tom P. Madsen’s Testimonial at King’s Lynn next month will have double the reason not to step out of line.

In a ground-breaking move Madsen will be using two referees to officiate his meeting at the Norfolk Arena on Friday, March 20.

Jim Lawrence and Mick Bates will be in charge on the night, with one of them in the usual position in the box and the other on the centre green in radio contact keeping a closer eye on proceedings.

Madsen explained his thinking behind the idea. He said: “This is something that should be introduced anyway as I think it would solve a lot of problems. The referee has a very difficult job to do trying to make the correct decision if anything happens on the track.

“Using this method, for example, one referee could watch the front two riders and the other could keep an eye on the riders in third and fourth place. It’ll be even more beneficial if the riders are spread out in a race.

“I’m happy they’ve both agreed to work on my meeting as I was always looking to do something different.

“In my opinion they are the best two referees in the business so it’s great to have them onboard.”

Meanwhile, two more names have been added to the line-up with Swindon’s Simon Stead and King’s Lynn favourite Tomas Topinka the latest to give their backing to the popular Dane.

Madsen said: “I’ve known Tomas from when we rode for the Stars together for a couple of years and he is very much Mr. King’s Lynn in the supporters’ eyes.

“I also rode with Steady at Belle Vue in 2006 and he is a true racer. I believe he will be very entertaining.

“Both are very good additions to the line-up and I thank them for accepting the bookings.

“The line-up is very nearly complete now and we have just a few more names to announce.

“We’ve worked hard to assemble a strong line-up and I’m sure it’ll be an entertaining evening. The riders will do their bit on the track and I’ve also got a couple of good guys keeping things going off the track.

“I have in my opinion two of the best microphone people in Kevin Long and Paul Hunsdon. Kevin’s presented at Ipswich and Mildenhall and Paul has been entertaining the fans at Reading the past few years with his own unique style of humour.

“I believe these guys can make a meeting, so fingers crossed people will go home having had a great night.”

MADSEN TESTIMONIAL LINE-UP COMPLETE

TOM P. Madsen has completed the line-up for his eagerly awaited Testimonial meeting at King’s Lynn on Friday, March 20.

Grand Prix superstar Hans Andersen has added his name to the list and Australian Kevin Doolan joins the Dane in completing the 16-man cast.

Andersen will be giving the Elite League a miss this season, but still intends to give his fellow countryman a huge helping hand on his big night.

The Dane has acclaimed legendary status at nearby, Peterborough over the past few seasons and a lot of Panthers fans are expected to make the journey to see their man turn-out for what is likely to be a rare British appearance this year.

Doolan will be another welcome face at the Norfolk Arena. The Aussie will be plying his trade with Workington for the forthcoming campaign, but prior to that, was a big points-scorer for King’s Lynn for several seasons.

With the meeting now just over three weeks away Madsen was pleased to finally name a full line-up. He said: “I am happy to have these two guys on board. They are both great riders in their own rights.

“Hans is an ex Danish Champion and is one of the best riders in the world. This is proved by his performances in the Grand Prixs and I’m sure he’ll be looking to do even better in them this season.

“I think he’ll provide entertainment and will bring extra spice to the meeting.

“Kevin is someone I have a lot of respect for and has done a superb job for King’s Lynn the past few years.

“Not many riders get the better of him at the Norfolk Arena in the Premier League and I think he will put up a good showing against the big boys at my meeting.”

Thats an awesome line up, shame this meeting is on a Friday :(

My thoughts exactly.

Whilst Tom P didn't set the world alight at Reading last year, he was one of the hardest working riders in the pits and a genuinely nice bloke too. I'd love to travel up and give my support to his testimonial meeting, unfortunately though on a Friday night that probably won't be possible.

Hope the meeting is a cracker though & with a huge crowd turing up to support Tom.

Looks like a cracking meeting, just gotta hope weather is all good.

Btw whats the format of the meeting is it a GP format with 2 semis, or top 4 straight to final or top 2 straight to final and one semi ?

Have to say I'm really looking forward to this meeting, well done to Tom and all his helpers for giving us such a great line up of riders to watch. :approve:

Totally agree, a great way to start the season. Hopefully the weather gods will smile on us.

Also hope Darcy goes easy on Nicholls and Andersen :P

MEETING PREVIEW

A HOST of top-class riders will be gracing the shale for Tom P. Madsen’s Testimonial at King’s Lynn on Friday, March 20

Madsen has been busy all winter organising everything for his big night at the Norfolk Arena and the opportunity to celebrate his ten-years in British speedway is now almost upon us.

The meeting will be run under a Four Team Tournament format, with proceedings getting underway with a full parade and presentation of riders at 7.00pm.

Each team will be managed by one of Madsen’s former British bosses, with ex-Berwick owner Peter Waite taking charge of Tom P’s quartet. The Bandits were the Dane’s first British club back in 1999 and, to this day he still remains an asset of the Border club.

With the preparations finally complete Madsen is now looking forward to the meeting itself. He said: “With all the organisation that goes into something like this I haven’t had too much time to think about the actual racing, but now that it is just days away I’m very excited about it.

“I’ve really enjoyed racing in Britain since first coming over here in 1999 and I’ve been lucky enough to ride for some good clubs and promotions.

“When we started talking about the organisation for this event I was keen for each of my clubs to be represented in some way. That is aided by having some of my old promoters and team managers taking charge of each of the four teams.

“I’m really pleased with the quality of line-up we’ve managed to assemble as well. It’s got a bit of everything, I think.

“We have some current and ex Grand Prix riders in Hans Andersen, Scott Nicholls, Kenneth Bjerre and Niels Kristian Iversen, plus also a host of top-quality Premier League guys. Add to that the current crop of King’s Lynn riders, some former home favourites and track specialists, and it all adds up to be a very competitive meeting on what I believe is one of the best race tracks in the country.

“The riders have been great to deal with and I’m still getting phone calls now from others who would like to take part. Also the guys and gals working behind the scenes have also been brilliant. In particular I’d like to thank Kerri Drew as she’s made things so much easier for me and my partner, Samantha. I couldn’t have done it without Kerri’s and everyone else’s help, so I hope it’s a successful evening for their benefit as well.

“Having two of the best referees in the business officiating should liven things up a little and will no doubt create plenty of discussion afterwards. It’ll be interesting to see how that develops on the night, but it is something I always set out to do as soon as I got a date for the meeting.

“I’ve also got two great guys on the microphones in Kevin Long and Paul Hunsdon and their excellent individual styles of presentation should make for an entertaining evening off the track.

“To add to the occasion, I’ve also booked a local band called ‘6ft Something’ to keep the fans amused before the parade. They will be performing from 6.05pm-6.45pm and their mix of classic and modern Punk/Rock/Ska covers should start the evening off nicely.

“All we need now is the weather to be kind to us.

“I trust the fans will go home afterwards having been fully entertained and their enjoyment and appreciation of things is very important to me on a night like this.

“I’m nervously counting down the hours now and I can’t wait for it all to start.”
