Talking of scaring I'm a bit concerned that Norbold might accept the offer of a lift from Parsloes if this all comes off.

It could be worse, I might offer to venture into deepest, darkest Essex and pick him up on the back of my Z1100!

How do you fancy that Norbs?

I'm sure our norbold will confirm that NOTHING will fill him with more trepidation than the streets of south London in the Parsloesmobile...!! I mean, how many red lights might there be...!!!:lol:

Thanks a lot, Parsloes. I put it to the Museum Committee today and they agreed in principle, asking me to take the lead in organising such an event. I wouldn't mind, but there are no copies of my New Cross book left as it is completely sold out, so I can't even make any money flogging them.

As I see it the main problem will be getting permission from Lewisham Council to use the site. Anyone know any Lewisham Councillors or officers I can work on?

Can see a few noise issues with the possibility of running up the bikes there with the houses in such close proximity and maybe other H & S problems. They might go for it if the area was used just to display them, and we all turned up. As anyone approached the local press as yet?

It might be worth getting something into them now and try and get them on board. Its not that far off really.

Yes, I agree Jim. The meeting was only yesterday so I haven't approached anyone yet. My initial thought really was to approach Lewisham Council to see if it was a starter before going to the press or anywhere else as I agree that there are all sorts of obstacles that the Council will put in our way. Another is public liability insurance, which the Museum only has for on site activities.

Although April would be ideal as the actualy month of the 75th anniversary I think we could hold the event any time this year if April proved a bit too soon to organise it all. It would still be the 75th anniversary year.

If we did go to the press, maybe speedyguy could help. I believe he has contacts in the local South London Press...

As for another ride in the Parsloesmobile....I'd rather take my chances with Lauren in Eastenders. (now you're all sorry you don't watch Eastenders as you've no idea what I'm talking about!)

Was any consideration given to . . .

Re 75th celebrations, what a great idea for a meet-up, and how about a plaque commemorating both the anniversary and respecting the tragedy of Tom Farndon on the site?

Hope something comes of all this

Yes, we did think about a putting up a plaque as the focal point of the day, but we're not sure where it would go as there are no buildings there.

Sorry to put a downer on all these ideas. As far as I am aware the local council does not allow any at Oliver’s Mount, Scarborough who own, it even though a few riders have been killed/lost their lives there over the years. I have never seen any anyway. It is a public park and that technically they ‘passed away’ in the local hospital. With Tom as we know, he actually did. Plus as you say Norman, given permission where could it go?

What is the significance of Oliver's Mount in Scarborough-was it a track-if not why were riders killed there??

Yes, it is used about 4 or 5 times a year for road racing. The track is the little road that goes around the park which is obviously closed when the racing is on.

Oliver's Mount is a purpose built race track situated on a hill in Scarborough. It is used about three to four times a year, mostly by the same guys who do the TT.

It used to be a Championship circuit, however take a visit there and you will see why it isn't now.

The circuit is used as a public road at all other times.

If you get the chance - check out the racing there its unbelievable.

Been going there for years since the early 70's, and for almost every meeting since 1995 and was there for all the meetings in 2008 including the Gold Cup in September. :approve: We have a trade stand at the top of the hill on the right in the trade site area. Agree with what you say though its worth a visit if you have never been :)

there are no copies of my New Cross book left as it is completely sold out, so I can't even make any money flogging them.

I saw SEVEN copies in an Oxford Street store this afternoon ;)

Thanks Shadders, I wondered where they were.

The reason The History Press have given me for not reprinting the book in spite of neither them nor me having any left and in spite of dozens of requests which neither of us can fill is that there are still "a few" copies left in a couple of W H Smith's shops in London and until they are either sold or returned they can't make a decision on a reprint.

So, in the meantime, speedway supporters who have contacted us can't get hold of a copy unless you go to W H Smith's in Oxford Street.

By the way, DKRA, any news from Lewisham Council?

Sorry Norbs, only just read this.

No news so far from my 'tame' councillor, not sure if she's too busy or just not all that interested.

You might be better off contacting them direct, but if I get anymore info in the meantime, I'll pass it on immediately, I would really like to see this event go ahead.

As others have said, there aren't too many places to put a permanent tribute; there is a concrete wall that could be used for a plaque, but it's within easy reach of anyone 5' 10" or above, so I don't suppose it would last long.

I like the idea of a dedicated bench, but again, it would probably need to be securely bolted down.

What you might be able to do is campaign to get the name of the area changed. That bit of grass is officially known as "Bridge House Meadows", presumably to commemorate a building that once stood near the canal bridge that is North of the green; as there's already a street name that recognises the bridge, maybe the council would consider a well put together argument that it should be called "Farndon Field" or "Frying Pan Green" or any other appropriate name.

Done the right way, I'm sure a good bit of local, if not National, publicity could be gained to get the snowball rolling; just a thought...............

Thanks for the suggestions, DK, I'll chase it up. :)

Forget the bikes for now and the plaque, or bench if as likely they will take about 5 years before they are allowed officially, why do not just arrange to have a meeting there Norman of like minded enthusiasts, and get a press release out about it. As its a public place we would not be breaking any rules or laws either. I would like to go back again and just to stand there and let it all go back over the memories in my mind (it must be at least 20 years since). It would be really nice to chat to other like minded folks, and we could all end up in a local pub (if there is one of those left to  ) and have a late lunch..... :approve:

Just a thought. :)
