Closed Tracks (where)

Some of the best maps are at Live Search Maps, which include birds-eye views in many urban locations

Just had a look at what I assume to be the old New Cross site situated at the end of Hornshay Street, off Ilderton Road

If I'm correct, on the green area, one can make out the outline of the track - or am I seeing things that aren't there?

If someone else has a look, can they find the old stadium steps referred to? Would be very interested

Cheers

Just wondering - can anyone find "the old stadium steps" on the map? Would be really really interested to know!

Quite by coincidence, I had to go to Ilderton Road today, so I thought I'd nip down Hornshay Street and see what I could find.

New Cross

I think the stairs are probably the third set and you can certainly see a vague oval outline from the top, as though they just filled the stadium with earth and planted grass.

Maybe Time Team should be called in to investigate this piece of sporting history.Love watching Once A Jolly Swagman just to see that old track.

God, what a good idea that is. :)

Thank you for sharing those.

What's the problem?

I was only answering a question posed by another poster, besides, I found it quite interesting; many members of my family, including my parents, went to New Cross every week, today was the first time I have ever been there and, save for a quirk of fate that put me in the area, I might never have gone there.

Now I could understand if I'd posted pictures of a derelict but basically intact stadium that, but for the lack of a few quid and a few NIMBYs, could be resurrected, but I can't see the point of getting overly precious about a place that hasn't held a race for 46 years and where almost no evidence exists that it was ever there.

Actually, it's quite refreshing. It sits like an oasis of greenery in a desert of bland housing blocks, so at least it's still capable of providing some small piece of relaxation or entertainment for the locals; better that than another faceless trading estate, which seems to be the fate of many defunct tracks.

I agree - and surely crying out for some kind of anniversary event sometime..: take the vintage bikes along, fire them up...etc.

Opened in April 1934 so, blimey, that makes this April the 75th. anniversary...!!

Come on norbold, do you and the Museum want to organise an event..? You'd sell more books; and why, I'd even give you a lift down there... :approve:

New Cross was before my time as a functioning track but I certainly knew (and still do...) a number of people who attended there and it was part of folklore in my South London childhood... The only track where my late father (born and bred on the Old Kent Road..) ever watched the sport...

Seems like a good idea to me, how about it norbs? maybe speedyguy could gee up a few of his SLP mates to do a piece on it, it might bring the history of the place to the attention of some of the current locals.

I might even be tempted to turn up myself, just so long as no-one expects me to do a few laps on the grass!

Excellent set to see - if you look at the site on Live Search Maps, using the birds eye view, the outline of the oval (and banking) is quite visible

Re 75th celebrations, what a great idea for a meet-up, and how about a plaque commemorating both the anniversary and respecting the tragedy of Tom Farndon on the site?

Err there wasn't a problem... I was thanking you for putting them up..

Perhaps the wrong smiley used then?..... usually means an exasperated expression. Must admit that's how I read the post as well but it's so easy to misunderstand things on here.

Ah, sorry about that Deano, Gemini is bang on the money.

I'm so used to people on here getting incandescent over the slightest thing, I took your little sarky smiley to mean you'd copped the hump about me posting pics of a dead track.

No worries buddy, I actually thought it was very unselfish of you to pass by, take pics and take the trouble to post them up. :approve: (different smilie  )

Thanks a lot, Parsloes. I put it to the Museum Committee today and they agreed in principle, asking me to take the lead in organising such an event. I wouldn't mind, but there are no copies of my New Cross book left as it is completely sold out, so I can't even make any money flogging them.

As I see it the main problem will be getting permission from Lewisham Council to use the site. Anyone know any Lewisham Councillors or officers I can work on?

Is it Lewisham or Southwark?

If it is Lewisham, I might be able to help a bit, as I'm working on a project that involves LC; I'm probably going to have some contact with them on Monday, I'll see what I can find out.
