parklife
Scunthorpe - Quibell Park is still a running track but not one that you could lay shale on top of on a weekly basis http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&...&iwloc=addr Scunthorpe - Ashby Ville has a trading estate on it. The main occupant being Morrisons but I would say the track was positioned across the road, probably in the car park of Burger King, Argos etc. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&...&iwloc=addr I think your spot on Richard. Ashbyville good racing, but a dump. You had to stamp the mud from your shoes at the end of a meeting. There is an aerial shot of the site with the old track on it in Morrisons. Quibell - nice stadium, poor track. Andy B-T (Using wife's log-in) Edited January 5, 2009 by parklife
Halifaxtiger
Which just about sums it all up doesn't it!! Why have a Speedway track or stadium when one could have instead...: a piece of waste ground...!!!! Has the old New Cross track site ever been built on..?? I recall my Dad pointing out the site (on which the contours of the former track were clearly visible) in the late '70s and I seem to recall seeing it largely unchanged even after the New Den was built..?? Surely that can't still be the case, can it..??!! I think that's right, Derek. I went there once after speedway had stopped (mid 80's I think) because I was going over to watch the mighty Blue Sox (as they are known now) take on Castleford at Wheldon Road. The dog track was still there then. If memory (pretty hazy) serves me correctly, the old bar at the stadium is now a pub. The track at The Shay has now been completely covered by the two completed stands at each end and the unfinished one on the side (the RL club & football teams are skint). Its a while since I have been to Odsal but the old speedway pits seem now to be courtesy boxes for Bradford Bulls (spits). Rochdale now has a Morrisons supermarket on it. martinmauger
Hull, White City 1930's - under block of flats, fire station and Teritorial Army barracks. Hull, Hedon (Hull Angels 1948/49) - just a field. Hull, Boulevard - looks much the same stadium very much showing it's age, 'cept for a dog track, amateur rugby still played, overgrown terrraces and one half of stadium, home stright side, is derelict. Hull, Craven Park - looks much the same with stadium tidied up, 'cept all semblence of track has disappeared, 3rd & 4th bend has "squared off" temparary terracing, rugby pitch much-widened and lengthened, no real sign that speedway was staged there for 11 years. Believe the pits were recently demolished. My pics of the above venues (not White City) circa mid-2006 appeared accompanying my own Backtrack article, issue 17 November-December 2006 (Billy Sanders cover) and illustrate Nigel Pearson's Speedway Star article, November 11 2006 (Joonas Kylmakorpi "Hammer Horror" cover). Some also appear on Retro Speedway/Gallery/Defunct Tracks and also Speedway Plus!/Stadia Pix websites.... scarletrider
Sunderland's old track, Boldon Stadium, is still there and looking better than ever after a total revamp. Just waiting for a promoter with vision to open up the speedway once again. (I can always dream can't I)
Chewbacca
Gosforth, just North of Newcastle, is now an ASDA supermarket. Was mainly a dog track but did run speedway for a few years many years ago.

Ron Butler
Right opposite where the arena was,is a Stadium Place(I seem to remember that being there during the racing days?) Just beyond that is none other than Belle Vue Avenue! Opposite what was the main entrance to the former Belle Vue amusement park and zoo on Hyde Road is Belle Vue Street. The land once occupied by the firework island is now the home of a hotel. The amusement park and zoo area is now a multiplex cinema, fast food restaurant and billiard/snooker hall. The mecca of true speedway once known as Hyde Road Stadium is now an extensive car auction site. The whole area is a sorry site to me as someone who spent many happy hours enjoying the various aspects of entertainment provided by Belle Vue (Manchester) Ltd. The real Belle Vue - in memoriam. I had a mooch around a few times before or after Millwall matches or i think once on the way to the New Den.There were some bits of stadium building still remaining.Concrete pillars which i guess were the stadium entrance. At the bottom of the embankment were at the time some small rooms which i guess were something to do with the turnstiles maybe.Up on the embankment there were still some of the terracing, which of all the bits i guess they would still be there. I guess you are talking about what i thought was a working mans club on the other side of the road to the old stadium.I didn't realise that had anything to do with the stadium.I wonder if that is still there as it looked pretty dingy and the area has been redeveloped.Plus it seems a fair number of the pubs in the area have closed anyway

Midland Red
The old stadium steps were still there when we last went to Millwall. Some of the best maps are at Live Search Maps, which include birds-eye views in many urban locations Just had a look at what I assume to be the old New Cross site situated at the end of Hornshay Street, off Ilderton Road If I'm correct, on the green area, one can make out the outline of the track - or am I seeing things that aren't there? If someone else has a look, can they find the old stadium steps referred to? Would be very interested Cheers Edited January 6, 2009 by Midland Red
keef
Great picture of Leicester 1957-exactly as I recall it-ta gemini. In an earlier post on this thread 25yearfan noted that BV current gates could double if ran on Sat instead of Mon.About how many people attend Kirky Lane each week-I have lost track(no pun) of attendances now-who would be the best supported tracks do you think and how many would they get-does anyone average say 5,000? Swindon average around 2,500,used to be 4,000 in the 70s...Poole could be the same or higher ? Coventry probably average over 2,000 , but doubt if any others would be over 2,000 ? Shadders
Dead centre of this photo is the site of Seedhill Stadium, home of the Nelson Admirals from 1968-1970 Site of Seedhill Stadium I've visited the site several times and seen the riders numbers painted on a wall at the back of the site where the pits were. The stadium was demolished to make way for the M65, although only a very small part of the site was built on, the rest remains derelict. Midland Red
Wombwell : Speedway racing took place at the South Yorkshire Sports Stadium. Wombwell entered a team in the 1930 Northern League. The sport was revived and operated in 1947 and 1948 when the Colliers raced in the National League Third Division. South Yorkshire Sports Stadium was redeveloped and is now the site of an industrial estate. Wombwell Sports Stadium (formerly the Dorothy Hyman Sports Stadium), which is close to the site of the South Yorkshire Sports Stadium is now the home of the South Yorkshire Kart Club, an MSA affiliated Kart racing club and also Wombwell R/C Model Car Club, a BRCA affiliated Radio Control car racing club. Wombwell FC share the same venue and part of the kart track runs parallel to and the length of the football pitch.
