Do You Remember The Songs Being Played?

Playing around on youtube today I was after some music that I could remember being played at the tracks from years ago between the heats. Just for a short trip down memory lane. :)

I went to Ipswich at Foxhall Heath with Bobby Dugard once in the early 60's and all they played all night was Frank Ifield and 'I remember you' and Ray Charles and 'I can't stop loving you'. I can slightly remember that at New Cross they often played a tune by Russ Conway but the actual name of it escapes me. Can you remember which one it was Norman?

Do you remember all the old songs played at the tracks and which were your favourites?

At Old Meadowbank, it was "The Black Bear"

Sorry, Jim, I can't. The song I remember most being played at New Cross was Good Timin' by Jimmy Jones. I don't know why, it has just stuck in my memory.

What I do remember really well are the songs they played at West Ham in I think c. 1968 or 1969 when they had a sponsorship deal with Buddah Records and played tracks from the Kasenetz-Katz LPs like "Kasenetz-Katz Super Circus" and "Kasenetz-Katz Singing Orchestral Circus" exclusively all season. Jerry Kasenetz and Jeff Katz were record producers who had got together a number of different groups to play together like a big band. The individual groups included 1910 Fruitgum Company, Ohio Express, Music Explosion, Lt. Garcia's Magic Music Box, Musical Marching Zoo, J.C.W. Rat Finks and St. Louis Invisible Marching Band.

They played such memorable songs as "Simon Says", "Yummy Yummy Yummy", "Chewy Chewy", "Goody Goody Gumdrops" and "Quick Joey Small"

They grew on you after a while.... :)

Found a few when I was attempting to do a little riding myself at Mildenhall. 'Rhinestone Cowboy' by Glen Campbell and January-February by Barbara Dickson.

Got the Good Timin (ticka-ticka) one by Jimmy Jones, Norman. And yes; I can remember that being played at New Cross. Thanks for that one. :)

This is interesting-I am interested in pop history-altho' 50's and 60's were my era- was the Russ Conway song "Side Saddle"? At Newport for some reason they played "From the Bottom of my Heart" by The Moody Blues-flipside of Go Now I think-also Go Now-this would be 64/65.Also Its Over by Roy Orbison in 64.

When I started going to Sheffield in 1982 I seem to remember them playing 'I Won't Let You Down' by PHD and 'Ebony and Ivory' by Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder all the time.

The one song that seems to have been played over and over again at Sheffield is Wipe Out, don't know who the artist is but usually follows a Sheffield 5 - 1.

Songs played regularly in my first couple of seasons around the southern tracks (mainly Hackney & West Ham in 1971 & 1972) were:

Chirpy, Chirpy Cheep Cheep (Middle of the Road)

Son of My Father (Chickory Tip)

Craklin' Rose (Neil Diamond)

Rose Garden (Lynn Anderson)

Tie A Yellow Ribbon (Tony Orlando & Dawn)

If they were playing the B side of 'Go Now', I can only imagine it's because the A side is probably one of the most poorly recorded tracks in the history of pop, so it probably would've sounded like white noise through a mid 60s PA system!

Incidentally, 'Go Now' hit the UK charts in December 1964, so it was probably the 1965 season you remember it from Bobbath.

As for Russ Conway, the tracks most likely to be played were either 'Side Saddle' (as mentioned) or 'Roulette', both #1s from 1959, the year that Russ was the best selling artist in the UK.

In any case, to jog a few memories, here's Russ playing 'Side Saddle' on the Billy Cotton Band Show (bit of a petrolhead himself, Mr Cotton Snr, finished 4th in the 1949 British GP).............................WAKEY WAKEY!

The Surfaris (or something like that!!). I introduced this at Cradley for 5-1's and used it at other tracks. Nice to know it is still used . Also had "Oh No!! " for an away 5-1.

That's strange - I remember "Eye of the Tiger" (obviously) and Shalamar "I Can Make You Feel Good" from then, but not the two you mention!!!

Berwick always tickles me - I'm sure I'm not the only one in this section of the forum who remembers the "Muscle Man" from Opportunity Knocks

When we went to Ipswich a few years ago we were very taken with one of the songs they played. (Well we are getting on a bit and it appealed to us!)

Took me ages to find out what it was and the answer in the end came from Superbart at Coventry who very kindly let me have a copy. It was by The Klaxons and called the Clap Clap Song (or Sound.) He regularly used to play it at Brandon afterwards and always got a good response with the air horns in time to the music. Now Superbart is back this season hopefully we'll be able to hear it again.

At The Shay Booker T and the MG's were played regularly and a song called The Hussle stick in the mind.

But they played some other great motown/soul discs too, which I understand were favourites of the 'voice of Halifax Speedway,' announcer Doug Adams. Can anyone give us a run-down of the records played at Halifax during the 70s/early 80s?

Guest Steve Dixon
Chirpy, Chirpy Cheep Cheep (Middle of the Road)

Son of My Father (Chickory Tip)

Craklin' Rose (Neil Diamond)

All played at Hyde Road too, remind me of the place everytime I hear them, also that annoying Popcorn tune, reminds me of the Langfield/Briggo crash in 72(think it was) BLRC
