SHALEWAY69
There have been several female speedway riders over the years, but did any make a team place or race in a four rider event ? I recall a Miss Terry at Hackney around 1980 and of course there were earlier riders such as fay Taylour, Eva Esquith and later Rosita Mattingley. tony
iris123
Think there have been a number of similar threads over the past few years. One young lady was in a couple of teams over the past 4 or 5 years.Jessica Lamb wasn't it?. Also in Denmark Nanna Jörgensen(foto) is in the Vojens team in the 1st Division. Not the top league. And there are a few more in Denmark in 500cc and 80cc teams In the gradings for next years Danish Superliga it looks like there might be 4 females in the "D" grade. That of course doesn't mean they will get a meeting. But alongside Nanna is Stefanie Jensen who i have also seen. Then it looks like Cebine Randrup and Amalie Hermansen might be female, but i am not sure on that!!! arnieg
Sabrina Bogh is probably the most significant female rider in the modern era. In 2001 she reached the European Junior Championship FINAL, finishing two points behind Neils K Iversen, ahead of Rinat Gafurov (and was watched by reserve Matej Zagar). To qualify she finished ahead of Peter Ljung, Jonas Davidsson and Mads Korneliussen She also won the Danish Junior Championship that year - Ulrich Ostergaard finished third

Peter
Angela McAlden rode for Lathallan and Charly Kirtland rode for Club CH. Montana Jowett takes part in amateur meetings at Scunthorpe and Kelly Watkins used to compete at that level at Lydd. There are a couple at Southern Track Riders meetings too. There was a Queen of Herts race at Rye House a few years ago featuring Jessica Lamb, Paula Millin and Kelly Watkins. Charly Kirtland was down to be in it but didn't turn up. There were a few rumours flying around at the time as to why she no-showed like she didn't want to get beat by Jessica! I recall a Maxine Hill as well in the 80s. I think she did second halfs. Edit - There is/was another female rider who took part in amateur meetings at Scunthorpe. She's from Scotland. I can't remember her name though. Dave Stummings
I recall a Miss Terry at Hackney around 1980 Well I have to say I do not recall a Miss Terry at Hackney. There was a Mark Terry in 1984, and we had a couple of lady speedway riders in the late eighties and early nineties doing second halves at Hackney and riding for the Earlybird Hawks. We had Maxine Hill and probably the greatest female speedway rider everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr in the world and that was Katie Mason, wooooo hoooooo ! John Hannibal Thomas
Edinburgh have been using a lady in their team for the past few years according to Tai Woofington. That lady goes by the name of Matthew Wethers.

Dekker
Also described as the flukiest double figure score ever seen in sports entertainment.Really LOL "Newcastle Team Manager George English said: “Edinburgh, sitting on top of the league, were always going to make this a seriously hard match for us and that was proved most effectively. “The track has suffered an enormous amount of abuse from the rain of late and there’s nothing we can do about the tricky third bend at the moment, but Edinburgh’s Matthew Wethers really does deserve a massive amount of praise for leading his team from reserve in seven wheel-perfect races. His performance was one of the best I’ve seen at Newcastle. " Read it and weep Edited November 30, 2008 by Dekker

I think it was Mark Terry's sister who rode at the Hackney training schools 1979-1980, cannot recall her name I think she may also rode at Iwade. can any Hawks fans or ex trainees confirm this? wot do you think Mick Fletcher.? the most famous name was fay taylour but i have yet to see evidence that she actually raced apart from exhibition match races. where lady speedway riders banned? Paul
and probably the greatest female speedway rider everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr in the world and that was Katie Mason, wooooo hoooooo ! Well, someone remembers Katie Mason BIG TIME ! Update on Kate now, well firstly she is now known as Kate Mcauley. Kate moved from the South Coast of England to the North East of England, just out side of Newcastle, to be precise a few years ago and still loves her speedway and motor cross. Kate rode at Kings Lynn a couple of years ago in a training day and caught the eye of Kings Lynn promoter Buster Chapman. Buster wanted to sign this brilliant speedway rider but Kate had to refuse due to work commitments! On a serious note although not riding competitively Kate still has the desire to race, has her bike in the garage and I guess once that racing bug is in your system it’s very hard to get out! Kate is on facebook.com and has pictures of her riding speedway and motor cross, also a piece on Kate is on www.hackneyreunion.com

Peter, I have never spoken to anyone about this and was never ask by anyone,i had forgoten all about it but as you have mentioned it again after all this time i will try and put this rumour to bed once and for all. Charly was 15 at the time, i phoned Rye the week before and told them i could not get time off,and that the only person i could ask to take her was Phill Morris but he could not help as he was away that week. I was told by my boss that if i took anymore time off i was out the door. Thats why she stopped riding not for any other reason. So if you hear any more rumours, like the one about her being pregnant or she did not like getting her hands dirty or any of that old c**p then please just smile at them. All the best, Rob. shazzybird
Was that an intentional typo Shazzy? Obviously you never saw her Rabbit ..... She was like a spaceman with padding in places I didn't think you could put it 10/10 to her for having a go but Women (with the exception of Maxine Hill and Jessica Lamb) should not ride speedway/grasstrack bikes
Peter
Women (with the exception of Maxine Hill and Jessica Lamb) should not ride speedway/grasstrack bikes Why not?! Are you suggesting they should be a certain standard before they can race? Do you think men who aren't as good as Jessica shouldn't ride too? If women get enjoyment out of it then they should do it regardless what level they are at.

I just don't think it's a sport for women, if you'll excuse the pun I don't think they have the balls for it. You have your opinion I have mine. I've been brought up in speedway for (god I hate saying this!!!) 40 years and I've yet to see a World Champion who is a women hmmmmmm apart from NikkiP nope he just acts like a girl
