Sheffield - March 2009 Ozchem Classic & Srbf Meeting

Recommended Posts

SHEFFIELD Tigers will launch their 2009 season with two high-profile events next March.

The Owlerton outfit will stage the Ozchem Classic on Sunday, March 15, in memory of the club's close friends Darren and Sharon Boocock who died in a road accident in July.

And a fortnight later Owlerton will host the inaugural Speedway Riders' Benevolent Fund meeting which, like the opener, is all set to pull in some of the top stars in the world.

Double world champion Jason Crump, who is sitting out the 2009 British campaign, is set to figure in at least one of the meetings – and Californian superstar Greg Hancock, who has not figured in this country since 2007, will ride for his close friend Boocock.

SRBF chief Paul Ackroyd has specifically requested the March 29 meeting to be held at Owlerton as he is a big fan of the venue and took note of the bumper crowd at September's Premier League Riders' Championship.

The benevolent fund is there for riders who miss racing because of injury – and to this day it still benefits some riders who are paralysed from their racing career.

Said Sheffield promoter Neil Machin: "It will take place at a time when riders are wanting to sharpen up for the season. We're already getting indications that some big names will do it."

Absolute wicked news, I am please to hear that there will be a meeting to honour Darren and Sharon Boocock, I know a lot of Sheffield fans were expecting this to happen last season, but it looks like Neil will be putting on a meeting worthy of the memory of both Darren and Sharon.

Well lets hope so, 1 rider ive never ever seen at owlerton, the polish god tomasz gollob i want to see him there before he retires :P:approve:

Nicki has ridden at Owlerton a couple of times, although back in his Newcastle days. It would be wonderful to see Tomasz Gollob there though as well.

How could Stoke fans forget...we drew 45-45...Nicki was guesting for Sean Wilson...scored 3,3,3,X,3...was the only real difference between the teams!

I remembered about that after I'd gone off the PC yesterday  and realised he couldn't have been riding for Newcastle then!

Sadly I missed Sean's meeting.

Nice to see already that the SRBF meeting might attract a few travelling fans.

as the 2008 season was coming to a close i was on my way to falling out of love with the sport and was considering picking and choosing the meetings i attend next year, or pack it in all together. this news has added fire to the belly and i shall be there in march as always!

lets just hope we dont all arrive and we get the dreaded announcement..."unfortunately tomasz gollob picked up a rare case of spode syndrome and his place will be taken by 'insert CL reserve'"

I'm in agreement with Sheffieldscot, anything near the standard of the Cracker will be superb but I can see these being even better.

Bottom line and the most important detail is that these 2 meetings are for very worthy causes and deserve the best line-up and organisation possible. Let's hope all involved make it happen.

I don't think you'll see Gollob there, he wouldnt do Poole's big meeting worth 20K or whatever it was...

I hope they go for a wide mix of EL and PL stars.

It's a bit odd that they are having two meetings so close together. Good luck with it, I hope plenty of money is raised and that everyone has lots of fun.

:)
