Peter Collins

I think you're underselling PC's performances after returning, as he was a genuine heat leader from 82-85. He averaged around 9 in 82 and 83, over 10 in 84 and over 8 in 85. It was only 86, when an old injury was aggravated after Kenny Carter knocked him off, that his average declined to around 6.5. Obviously, nowhere near the performances of his glory days, but he was still a fantastic sight around Hyde Rd.

He also picked up the world pairs titles back to back in 83,84 as well as being runner up in 82, and finished on the rostrum at the BLRC in 85.

I feel priviledged to have seen him and Mort riding together so many times in heat 13 around the greatest racetrack in speedway History (and watching him and smudger ride together in 84 was always pretty exciting too!).

Another outstanding display from Peter Collins in the 1980's was a test match at Sheffield against the USA. I'm not sure of the year, possibly 1984? But i remember PC turning back the clock that day. I also saw him at Poole around the same time and he turned in a vintage display that night too, untill he blew a motor! and all this after some local supporter's questioning his inclusion in the England side!

Parsloes, I thought were PC's No. 1 fan?

He was not allowed to ride in the 1981 British Championship by the British speedway authorities as he had opted to spend the year riding on the continent ....

I am mate, but I am also an old geezer and prone to memory loss!!

Also 1981 was absolutely the height of my drinking 'career', so no wonder with all those brain cells disappearing I forgot this....!!!

I lie, BTW, I drank just as much in '82-'87: then came the kids!!!!

My memory is not what it used to be! most meetings from yesteryear blend into one  but i would hazard a guess at it being either Dennis Sigalos Or Bobby Schwartz as i'm sure he was paired against them that day.

Did either of you two see PC win the northern riders final held at Halifax in either 84or85. He was pretty good that afternoon too although a certain Mr Carter was absent on that occasion.

I think my first sight of PC was at Blantyre in 1979, when he and a full strength Aces side paid a visit, suffice it to say PC was dire, the young Tigers sent their illustrious visitors packing after a comfortable win and super Steve Lawson romped to his customary maximum.....happy days :approve::wink: Cant remember why PC didnt ride at all well, but the young MJFC was very impressed with his gold Citroen Safari in the car park :D

Was this not the meeting Collins junior, Neil, was a match winning reserve in the dying heats

Even the great PC had is off days and i seem to remember their were quite a few of them in 1979. But he certainly made up for them with the times he lit up meetings over the years with his breathtaking riders from the back!

  • 3 weeks later...

First saw Peter Collins as a not even programmed match day afterthought in the Rochdale line up. Three rides, zero points, three stone dead lasts looking like a total novice. Which of course he was.

Saw him many times after that. What an incredibly exciting speedway rider worth travelling hundreds of miles to see.

One of Britains best ever riders.
