Scunny Stag
It is obvious that there is a huge gap in our sport whereby anyone not riding at least a 250cc bike can't get any meaningful racing. This obviously excludes younger riders and those unable to invest the larger sums required for a 250cc machine. Scunthorpe Speedway are looking at trialling some form of meeting for riders on 125cc machines (or smaller). If we can get at least eight people interested then, possibly on 13th December, we will run some form of competition. It will be a trial and we will look at running two bikes alongside each other and also see if pursuit (two riders starting on opposite sides of the track) works. At this stage it won't be about trophies or titles but simply a way of giving meaningful, competitive practice to riders who otherwise might have to look elsewhere for some racing experience. We would look at having Wayne Carter in attendance (or a suitable alternative if he isn't available) and costs would be the same as a normal 'Wayne' session. £25 with your own bike, £60 with bike and equipment hire. If anyone is interested please send me an e-mail to richard@scunthorpespeedway.com. Edited January 15, 2009 by Scunny Stag

tas
Yeah my son AJ would be interested. We have been to Scunny before. I agree it is helpful for clubs to rent bikes for people to try out the sport

RPNY
Why could we not get some of the Sky money to buy 10 or so 80cc bikes the same as they use in Sweden & Denmark & the necesaary helmts, boots, protection etc so that kids from say 10-13 can ride team events. They could be based at Scunny but easily transported to the other mini tracks in the country. I think it would be a big step forward in getting youngsters in this country a good start to speedway. As opposed to just going to a track day & riding round on their own all the time..

Scunny Stag
There has been enough interest to ensure we run our first 'meeting' on our mini-track on Saturday 13th December (12-4pm). If anyone else is interested in joining in the fun please give me a call to discuss. Riders of ALL ages and ALL abilities are welcome. Cheers, Richard
whowasthatberntpersson
Good luck with this venture. Australia has a thriving 125cc junior speedway scene which obvioulsy works, preparing youngsters from 7-16 for the step up. In my opinion these bikes are only suitable for mini tracks though. I have loads of 125cc racing clips if anyone is interested. By the way when you see the Title "Australian Under 16 Championship" or Junior Championship, it means Under 16's on 125cc machines. We also have a 350cc class now, its for 14 to 16 year olds and the boys are stepping off the 125's with enough skill to handle the 350's, or in some cases riding both bikes for competition.. Its a system that works. Edited November 28, 2008 by whowasthatberntpersson
Scunny Stag
Sadly due to the daily frosts we have had this week there is no chance of the track being fit for action this weekend. This means the 125cc mini-track meeting due to take place this Saturday has had to be cancelled. No new date has been set as yet but the club is hoping to be in January. tomcat
Despite the unfortunate cancellation, due to the pesky weather, this is a fantastic step forward and a huge amount of credit must go to Scunthorpe for getting this up and running. I hope that you get some favourable weather in the New Year and are able to hold your first 'meeting' for the 125's. I just wish you had been doing this before I left the shores of England, as we have nothing over here in Northern Ireland and its just way too expensive to fly/drive over for my lad to have a go. He desperately wanted to follow his Dad onto the shale, we took him to Sittingbourne's mini track a couple of times, where he definitely showed a natural flair for handling a speedway bike. Its not outside the realms of possibility that we will be moving back over in the not too distand future, so we will make a point of getting to Scunthorpe when we do. Good Luck to everyone involved and maybe now the BSPA/SCB will get their collective heads out of their backsides and get a national training setup started, but I won't be holding my breath on that. Scunny Stag
I'm sorry for the relatively late notice on this one but on Saturday week, 24th January, Scunthorpe Speedway are going to re-run the mini-track meeting that should have taken place the on 13th December. It is obvious that there is a huge gap in our sport whereby anyone not riding at least a 250cc bike can't get any meaningful racing. This obviously virtually excludes younger riders from the sport and those unable to invest the larger sums required for a 250cc machine. The meeting will see all those present racing in two or three rider races on the club's 92-metre mini-track and is simply a way of giving meaningful, competitive practice to riders who otherwise might have to look elsewhere (like grasstrack) for some racing experience or might never experience the thrill of speedway racing. Wayne Carter, the vastly experienced former Elite League rider, will be in attendance to offer guidance whilst the costs will be the same as a normal 'Wayne' session. That is £25 with your own bike and £60 with bike and equipment hire. If anyone is interested please send me an e-mail to richard@scunthorpespeedway.com
