Also, to add, since when has the NYC ever been put out to tender?

It has always gone out to tender but there was a gentlemans agreement for Newport to run it as they needed the money it generated, so others did not apply.

Now that Newort are currently a defunct club what is the point of them still having it? Until they are resurrected why should this meeting also go down the pan?

have just got in from work & cannot beleive this.....please tell me this isnt true!

well at least matt ford has lived up to his teams nickname....

very disappointed, as someone else mentioned speedway prides itself on being a family sport & a sport that acts like a family - this is just not the case anymore it seems to me

i too am losing interest - tim was often perceived as a stuborn man & not easy to work with - but to his enternal credit he resurrected the wasps from nowhere - and started a traditional winter meeting possibly the two things he will be remebered for - so poole please dont P*** all over that - surely the poole promotion could have mad the effort to stage it at newport if were so upset at tim's passing and donate the takngs to a charity or even upkeep of the stadium tim created?

rant over

newport are only a defunct club until probate has finished so until the end of probate nothing should have been announced

I think the emotive angle is what is making this announcement worse. Personally, I'm not bothered we're having the meeting, and I'd not be bothered if Newport were.

But...the question here, and forget my club loyalties for a second, I ask this purely out of curiosity based on the comments posted; but why is it Newport's divine right to hold the winter meeting? I understand that Tim took the risk and the plunge and fair play to him for that, but does that mean that no other club should ever get a look in to hold a meeting over the winter? What if Coventry decided they wanted to; or Ipswich? Why should they be prevented from doing so because another team has the tradition. Times change and perhaps going forward other clubs might want a try for a winter event. I'd be interested in the objective replies without any emotion to do with Tim's untimely death.

Butu here's the problem. No one wanted to run it at newport. Reading through the Newport thread in the PL section, it seems someone asked the Reading promoters to run it at Newport, but they obviously didn't want to otherwise they would have applied. All this libellous BS about Matt ford applying for the meeting before Tim Stone had been buried is garbage and the writer knows that as well. Posts like that are just set in inflame rather than look at the situation sensibly and logically.

Big bad Poole trample over the small fry clubs. Not true is it? All Matt Ford has done is make sure the event continues whilst Newport find a new owner and once they are back up and running, the chances are it will return there.

For the umteenth time, Poole were the only club to submit a request to hold the meeting. that's why they won it.

Why not contact the Reading promotion and ask them why they let your club down by not applying to run it at Newport?

I believe that there is more than a little spin in this statement, which you probably know only too well.

The new owner of Newport Speedway asked the Reading Promotional team to run the New Year Classic. That much was reported in the Speedway Star and it would now appear that the meeting had already been allocated to Poole.

I was given to understand that the application from Poole was put in very shortly after Tim's death, that may or may not be accurate but I do believe it as it came from a source that I trust.

If Matt Ford was being so wonderful and only wanted to make sure the event lived on then he is now in the perfect position to prove it by handing back to the new owner of Newport!

As to the question of why the meeting should stay at Newport. As stated before the whole team there were the only one's willing to put in the huge amount of time and effort to make a meeting at that time of year succesful. Nobody else wanted to run a meeting until somebody else made the format work. Newport Speedway has earned the right to that meeting over the past ten years.

Get one thing straight Newport are NOT a defunct club, I resent your asumptions they are. They are tempoarlily inactive due to tragic circumstances, they will start up again. It was to be in January , but Poole jumped in before Tim was even buried, Matt Ford quite frankly gives not only Speedway, but the town of Poole a bad name.
