I am increasingly infuriated by the fact that despite all the happenings of the last week in the financial markets we still see the bank's TV adverts being transmitted without even a pause for decency. We have shareholders who have lost millions, all of us with pension money evaporating overnight and millions just scared stiff of how the whole thing is going to affect us ... and that ridiculous nerd from the Halifax continues to dance and sing in a tropical beach location!. Have they no shame! But aren't we, in Speedway, going to face something even more perverse next week? IMG/BSI, and following on Sky TV and their talking heads, are all going to be talking up a giveaway bonanza of $200,000 on the Super Prix Final as if nothing has changed after the Gelsenkirchen debacle. How is that really going to be possible? Can you really estimate just what the level of un-compensated losses will have been suffered by many, many people? The numbers must be massive. There is not just the thousands of travelling fans with all their costs of flights, car hire, hotels etc, there are the riders whose combined costs for a GP weekend must be huge, but there will be many others including TV companies, journalists and photographers. Just how many enemies of influence have IMG/BSI just made? How can anyone, even within IMG/BSI, seriously contemplate marketing the $200,000 race in the face of the costs that are not being compensated? Next weekend in Bydgoszcz the World Championship is still to be decided, and although Nicki should do it easily, the title still actually has to be raced for and won. So the meeting has genuine purpose. But surely the so called 'Super Prix' element is a different matter. It has no history or relevence except that the concept was dreamed up by IMG to make sure that the final round still had something to race for. It is surely the first thing to go in a crisis. And this is surely a crisis. Wouldn't it be the right thing to do, the decent thing, even, to put that $200,000 into a 'rescue fund' that could compensate people who have been so heinously treated this dark weekend? Being in Hooters with a ridiculous sized mug of beer, gawping at the birds in there till 5 in the morning, slighlty numbed the pain! There are too many coincidences for me not to think it was canceled on Purpose. I know this forum has it's fair amout of BS on it, but this time there is a lot of sense being spoke. The fact that an alt venue was decided so quickly, is the final bit of evidence I need. I'll still go to these GP's (more fool me) but I love the GP's & love going to places I otherwise wouldnt. On a different note, watching the Darts, Dave Lanning has to start covering Speedway again. Also, what shall we call next weekends GP? Reaso Snr Posted October 12, 2008 Report Share Posted October 12, 2008 Having just returned from Germany this morning with my Dad, Ill give my view on what happened / didnt happen!! We arrived on Friday morning and as our room wasnt ready we decided to go and see where the stadium was and to see if we would be able to see any practice, we went to the main reception where after asking what time practice started, some very helpful German proceeded to take us right into the press conference which included Jason Crump, Martin Smolinski, Rune Holta and Scott Nicholls!!! Once that finished me and my dad, roamed around to see there was any way we could get into the practice, and having slipped by a pre occupied security guard, we were in the pits!! A roller was going round and round the track we peered over the fence and the track was squeezing out the side of the roller leaving ruts 2-4 inches deep and it was so spongy it was unbelievable! Apparently the lorries were sinking when bringing the shale into the stadium! We spoke to a few riders and a few said it will be fine and a few were saying otherwise!! We also heard that the shale was delivered a few weeks before and that due to Shalke having a game, it was left outside and that BSI wouldnt pay for to have it covered up!!An hour or so later we still hadnt been rumbled as the only people without passes around our necks, the engines started to be warmed up, the track hadnt altered although they had tried to rip it up and roll it again, it was freezing cold in the stadium ,having just a t shirt on due to the sunshine outside, hence the track not drying out, then outcame Pedersen, Adams and Crump and 3 laps later and non really being able to turn the bike they went back in and half hour later an announcement was made that practice was cancelled till saturday morning at 10am. When we heard saturday afternoon that it was off, we could believe it but couldnt believe that an indoor meeting had been called off due to a waterlogged track!!! Whoever you spoke to no one could believe it!! We ventured down to the stadium for something to do, and there were still people arriving not knowing it was off including Germans!!! There was no trouble that we saw but maybe speedway fans are used to the unimaginable happening and the sport being run so badly!! Sat here now I still cant believe it, Its cost us a few hundred pounds each, it must have cost the riders a small fortune too, this could only happen in speedway! However having had 24 hrs to think about this I personally don't think there was any hidden agenda behind this, it's just been a complete balls up. Surely no Insurance Co/Policy would cover human incompetence, therefore this farce must have huge financial implications on IMG. Lets assume the following: Reported ticket sales were relatively low (10-11000). These as stated will be refunded in full along with a free ticket to another GP say average ticket price of £35 refunds of £350,000 due (double this if everybody takes up the offer of a free GP next year) Stadium rental £ ?? Riders costs ? Staff ? Pre Meeting Promotions? Lost Sponsorship Revenue from meeting Sponsors, Track Building and Shipment Costs and anything else I've missed. The following costs of renting Bydgoscz, possibility of no meeting sponsor along with all the other associated costs. Would imaging they are looking at a £1 million plus hit. Therefore getting the meeting ON I feel would have been their(IMG) main priority. My own thoughts on this follow: Following the last indoor meeting in Denmark and all the crashes due to the rutted track it was reported that a number of high profile riders had stated that should they produce a indoor track like that again in the future they would refuse to ride it. I personally feel that the riders have taken that stance this time and got the FIM to back them up. IMG have I think been quite happy to run the indoor meetings on temporary tracks that they know cut up and cause error's and accidents to try and make the sport more gladitorial and tv friendly. (Who knows it may be under their instructions that Ole builds the track to create this.) Having finally realised that apart from a few riders the vast majority of the meetings profits go elsewhere, the costs incurred in running in the GP, the vast majority of the rider's have seen sense and regardless of cost and potential losses have told IMG they would not ride on an unsuitable track (unlike the last ten eight years when the potential of worldwide \GP earnings were unknown. (Out of Interest does anybody know if the riders recieve much more in points and prize monies now than eight years ago) IMG are to embarrased to state the riders won't ride, make up excuses about the track to try and save face. Wether we will ever find out the true reasons I don't know. But I feel we might be in for an interesting close season regarding the GP. Doe's fresh faces and youth equate to (we will race on any track you lay Sir) because I want to be World Champion and I'm to young to see the bigger picture and where all the monies gone. I will watch next week with interest to see if anyone is held up to take the blame. If someone's head doesn't roll then !!! (Could this be the end of the Man Made Tracks? I personally hope not, however thats another argument ) On realising that the meeting was not going to go ahead a contingency plan had to be put into place to annouce to the fan's and Press, hence Poland. On a final note, why they hold the final meeting in Germany (not one of the better supported Speedway hotspots) is beyond me. These programmes are large glossy books, priced at £8 at Cardiff and they have to be re-printed on the day of the meeting because of an error? How gullible do they think fans are? I have also scanned the Sky programmes and there is no replay of this meeting scheduled! The situation re. the meeting programme seems to me here to be critical. We've seen mention that someone trying to buy a prog. was told there weren't any..!! Did anyone who was there get one or see one..?? If the answer to that is "no", then there can surely be absolutely no doubt that this meeting was called off long before yesterday or rather that there was no plan to hold it yesterday at this venue. If I was one of those who had travelled I would be preparing to sue the ar*e off the crooks who have done this. Can the whole group not get together to do this..??? This effectively now MUST be the end of the GPs. If it isn't then it IS the end of international individual Speedway as any kind of serious sport. It is also remarkable that Sky hadn't programmed in 'reruns' of the GP. I haven't checked this but IF this was the case it would, extraordinarily, imply that somehow they were in on this. An unlikely concept - and I'd intrinsically be against the conspiracy theories myself too.. - but what other rational explanations can people suggest. .. I think most fans have embraced the GP's it's only the dinosaurs that just won't let the one day final go. And sorry, m8, but I can't believe you've posted this..!!
