shazzybird
14 November - Melbourne Hmmmmm all well and good but what if Nikki isn't quite prepared for the GP and all the fans have there tickets and are there ready to watch the meeting but the shale has been left out over night and it's rained and now they can't dry the track out in time so it will have to be arranged for the following week at another venue just a thought

Trees
If someone in Australia thinks they can make money on an SGP round, or just wants to inflate their own ego by running one Well if they don't look back at the disaster the last one was then they must be mad! Jeff.
Well if they don't look back at the disaster the last one was then they must be mad! Ah right so if at first you dont succeed, give up. Fortunately the world is full of people with ambition to make things work, not give in at the first sign of difficulty
Humphrey Appleby
Fortunately the world is full of people with ambition to make things work, not give in at the first sign of difficulty There is ambition, and there is stupidity (not that BSI had to pay for their Aussie ambitions themselves last time around). There is no point staging a hugely expensive event in a country where speedway falls way down the pecking order of sports, and in a city with few speedway traditions in recent years. Last time around, the riders were unhappy because they lost money, and the promoter lost a vast amount of money. What would be different now, and in a more difficult economic climate? Ah right so if at first you dont succeed, give up. Easy to say if it's not your money. Would you invest your money in promoting an Aussie GP? Fortunately the world is full of people with ambition to make things work, not give in at the first sign of difficulty Now, that is the attitude Jeff!! Like it! I had the pleasure of attending the last G.P. in Oz and to be fair, I made sure it was sandwiched into a fantastic three week holiday, what a time...... I think staging the last G.P. over there is a bit rough on the European fans who have backed the series as a whole, both in numbers and with their wallets. Why not stick the first one over there, that makes more sense to me??? To be honest, I think the middle ground is the U.S.A. Still a reasonable distance for most fans to get too, even the Ozzies?? I think a U.S. GP is more viable, would possibly be better supported by the fans but then again, I'm just a fan. Fortunately the world is full of people with ambition to make things work, not give in at the first sign of difficulty Top Post Jeff, we're talking about Australia here, a Country where Self-reliance, Self-help, Self-initiative and a Can-do attitude is the norm. No harm in thinking positive is there? There is no point staging a hugely expensive event in a country where speedway falls way down the pecking order of sports, and in a city with few speedway traditions in recent years. You forget the Australian propensity for attending ANY Sporting Contest, particularly in Melbourne, undeniably the world's sporting capital. This will be a magnet for Motor Racing Fans of any description; the opportunity of seeing the World's Best in any division would galvanise the Oz sporting Public from Steep Point to Cape Byron, from Cape York to South Cape Bay. A magnificent centrally-located venue plus State and Local Government assistance from the Major Events Committee - you know - the mob that brings us a Major Sporting event in Victoria once a month if not more - would go a long way to ensuring the event at least broke even financially and IMG are wise enough to appreciate this. Once OZGP is set up and running then its on to So. Cal and Nippon. Don't forget, if Bernie and his mates can sell a GP to a mob of towelheads in Dubai I'm sure Harry Horsley & co at IMG can flog a Motorsport GP to a bunch of Revheads, with or without the Masterminds at BSI. Very stirring, but would you bet your farm on it? BigFatDave
Very stirring, but would you bet your farm on it? I'd be extremely surprised if there wasn't a full contingency plan from IMG to take SGP forward, wouldn't you? F1 and the SGP are galaxies apart. In the words of Oddball: "Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change? Always with the negative waves Humphrey, always with the negative waves. "

Humphrey Appleby
I'd be extremely surprised if there wasn't a full contingency plan from IMG to take SGP forward, wouldn't you? Increasingly looks like a fire sale from BSI, so who really knows? Always with the negative waves Humphrey, always with the negative waves. Well in fact, I have nothing against a Aussie GP, as it doesn't affect the European season and would make the series more global. However, doing something that's unrealistic and stands a good chance of damaging the prospects of future stagings, is worse than doing nothing at all. The world is full of well meaning people, but being well meaning and misdirected is ultimately futile. The SGP does not appear to be healthy financially or competitive wise at the moment, and I'm sure the Gelsenkirchen fiasco can't have helped. I think IMG/BSI need to focus on getting their core business right - not going off on flights of fancy at this stage.
