Ghostwalker
Swedish Motorcycle and Snowmobile Federation (SVEMO) has made the following decisions regarding mandatory arena safety equipment in Sweden. From 2009: All Elitserien and Allsvenskan arenas must have a hard fence on the straights (of formplyfa type) together with the already existing net fence. All Elitserien arenas must have airfences in the bends in addition to with the already existing net fence. All tracks must have car tires covering the steel poles which hilds the fence in position. On 80cc tracks where the track is inside the 500cc tracks hay bales must be placed in the bends where the 500cc and 80cc tracks merge. From 2010: All Allsvenskan tracks must have airfences in the bends in addition to with the already existing net fence. All other 500cc tracks must have a hard fence (same as Elitserien) on the straights. superguest
You have to say, this a major step forward for the sports future. Well done Svemo!
Liverstam
I'm not so sure about well done SVEMO... Roll on an endless line of dispensation for tracks not able to meet the new demands. Well it's either that or close down altogether.
schumi
Agree with you, Erik. Whilst in an ideal world there would be air fences at all tracks, the Swedish economy isn't great at the moment, and teams are struggling. Who's going to fund this? And what happens if the teams simply can't afford it - will they still be able to run? Wondering if Masarna will fancy a spell in the Allsvenskan after all, if it means they get an extra year to find a fence. Luckily, in Smederna's case the "department of Culture and Recreation in Eskilstuna" has agreed to fund an airfence for Smedstadion. Not sure how other teams will fund. Liverstam what about Hammarby? would Hammarby be allowed to put up an airfence on Gubbängen?

Well it's either that or close down altogether. The swedish clubs could do something similar to what was done over here in GB with riders racing a meeting for free raising money to buy the airfences! I always thought the fans would dip into their pockets to finance them too ............................. I certainly would!

The problem is to put it up and take it down every Tuesday, and where to store it in between meetings. I guess.

Source: http://www.svemo.se/file_out.php?id=2776 (pdf file) It all sounds good.....apart from this. Not so sure about this one.I mean i have often seen riders go out of the 80cc track onto the 500cc track without incident. And although i think proper 80cc tracks like Vojens or Skaerbaek with a fence around the track are better, i don't think a run-off area is a bad thing either Edited August 29, 2008 by iris123

Liverstam
Run-off areas are the best, just look at road racing. Before they introduced the run-off areas riders where dropping like flies. Nowadays they can skid off at tremendous speeds and walk away unscathed. BUT, and that's a big but, could it work for speedway? You need the closeness or less it loses alot of it's appeal, and most tracks around the world would have to be re-built.

That is what is was saying. So i don't understand(maybe i have it wrong here)why they are stopping the run-off area when an 80cc track is inside a 500cc track? It seems that they want to put bales around the bends rather than use the 500cc track as a run-off area.Or are they trying to get the youngsters used to the idea of a fence being there? But they will ride on 80cc tracks with a proper fence often enough anyway.Oh,i don't know......
