f-s-p
To be fair, I think it was the jury president Andrzej Grodzki (also UEM track racing comission president) who suggested this run-off system and the referee accepted it. Which exclusions do you mean? There was just one, Gizatullin was excluded for fencing Kus. Coming out of the 4th bend Gizatullin ran straight into Kus, put him in the fence and czech rider crashed hard. They took him to hospital but first reports said that nothing was broken, he was conscious but the doctors were doing some extra examination just as a precaution. Poor choice of words (again). Sportowefakty has riders in the reruns with d (disqualified in Finland) and that's defekt in Polish (= R), not disqualied.
tomazpozrl
Ok, now I understand. All those R's weren't actually 'defekt's (engine failures), riders simply retired from the heat as they realized they don't have a chance to qualify to the final heat. arnieg
Fair play to the referee and everyone else involved. That was an ingenius way of sorting it all out. I was impressed. It's been the standard method for many years - (thankfully) it isn't needed very often, but I think it should be known to most officials. However I don't know if it is written into the regs if so which ones. (I'd guess it is in FIM regs, but of course this was a UEM event) I did find an event where they used an alternative way to sort out a multi (ie 5+) rider tie. The 1966 Swedish Championship. They drew lots and seeded Fundin to the final of the run-off, then had a run-off among the other four riders for places in the title run-off. [Fundin won]

Spot on. I remember it well, because we had a five rider tie for places 3-7 in the Swedish U16 Championship final back in 2005, in Vetlanda. I was the programme editor and I/we didn't have enough empty heats in the programme for the 4 heat run-offs so I stood there with the shame.
