spinkox
Could well have been Trofimov, I was only about 8 years old at the time. I read somewhere that one of the Ruskies was a big badge collector, maybe a few of them were? Can't speak for VT - but I swapped badges with Igor Plechanov at Wimbledon around 1968. Bavarian
One thing strikes me. Even then in 1973, the British promoters seem to have organised this spectacular tournament on their own! It was not the FIM, who then as now runs the official world team cup, but the British promoters seem to have set this tournament rolling on their own initiative. Unfortunately the promoters did not seem to realize the golden opportunity to build on this. If they had done so, we could now have a mega successful speedway world cup tournament a la rugby world cup every four years. The Rugby Union world cup tournament was a late starter, too, but look what they have achieved since that inaugural tournament of 1987. Speedway could have had the same since 1973, bud sadly did not take adavantage of a golden opportunity. What a shame for speedway!
Wessex Wanderer
Oh how right you are Bavarian. A wonderful opportunity missed. That series really gripped the imagination even though it had to be completed by a combined Norway/denmark team (to allow Ole Olsen to strengthen the Norway team!) and (I think) a Rest of the World team. A regular (every 2 or 4 years) series was there for the taking but, in usual Speedway fashion the chance was missed. I wonder whether international politics had something to do with it - Germany and some of the other Speedway also rans were very influential in the FIM at the time and, of course there was no way at all in which they could have played a major on track part in such an event. One more missed open goal for Speedway.
andout
I'd just settle for an England v Australia at PL level right now. Yes I went to a bunch of those '73 meetings including the Final.....most of them were pretty darn good.
