spin king
No this Pete Smith was born in Barnsley, and also rode for Kings Lynn and Leicester in the British League, curiously he never rode for his local team Sheffield. I believe that he went on to sell speedway spares from a van, but I don't think that he still does that now.
star ghost
This rider has been named as Peter E Smith in some records to avoid confusion with the Poole rider Peter's record shows him as first riding for Lynn in 1975 and being loaned to Middlesbrough. From 1975 to 1978 Peter rode in 115 matches for the lower League side. During these seasons he also filled in at Kings Lynn on a few occasions and in 1978 he doubled up riding 17 times for Lynn, mostly as reserve. During 1979 & 1980 Peter appeared 70 times in the Stars team. In 1979 he had what I think was his finest hour. In the Maurice Littlechild Trophy Peter scored 13, a score equal to Gordon Kennett & Bo Petersen. Peter led the way for three laps in the run-off and then his bike ground to a halt robbing him of the trophy. For the 1981 season Peter was a regular in the Leicester team riding 42 times for them. He also had a spell riding for Stoke during that season on 18 occasions. Stoke was his home for 1982 & 1983 when he made a further 74 appearances for the Potteries side. His official match appearances total some 340 but he scored well enough for all his teams. I remember Peter as a rider who was always friendly to the followers of Speedway and one who was always ready to give it "a go" when it was really needed. You are right that Pete didn't ride for Sheffield, but was pretty pally with most of the tigers of the time, particularly Reg Wilson, and used to watch at Owlerton when his other commitments allowed. He actually grew up in Sheffield ( Would it be Hoylake or similar, where his dad - Edward- had a milk round business). I lost touch with Pete a few years ago, but I'm fairly sure that he went on to own a local shop in Sheffield at that time

Hoyland was where he lived whilst riding for King's Lynn. But he was born & grew up in sheffield only moving once married
spin king
OK. Hoyland was where he lived whilst riding for King's Lynn. But he was born & grew up in sheffield only moving once married I think that you find that he was born in Barnsley, you could be right about him growing up in Sheffield though, Hoyland is actually on the border of Barnsley and Sheffield, but actually in Barnsley. clevelandbay
Miffy the Bean! I remember his times at Middlesbrough with great fondness. Does anyone remember his mate Mike Sanderson who rode in the Scottish Junior League with Barry Simpson and Tim Nichol? I think that you find that he was born in Barnsley, you could be right about him growing up in Sheffield though, Hoyland is actually on the border of Barnsley and Sheffield, but actually in Barnsley. star ghost
Mike rode for the Scottish Junior side when they came to meet the Anglian Junior Side at Kings Lynn. I have the programme somewhere and can let you have race details if you want them. The "Allthread Scottish" & "The Anglian" were the 2 Junior second half competitions of the time and met in a "testmatch" on one track in each league that season. There was also a midland Junior Section run as well but I can't remember them being involved in the Inter-League events of the day.

Main Man
I've got Pete to register on BSF and he's been trying to log on tonight --unsuccessfully so far by the look of it. So watch out for 'Smurf' on here soon!!
