In fact they are nearly all English. There may be the odd Scot or Welshman or maybe Australian, but probably well over 90% were English.

Spencer Stratton was a New Zealander who did a lot of racing in Australia. He also raced in America in the 1920s.

 

I think you'll find Jack Sweeney was also a New Zealander. I found an article in a Bathurst newspaper during the 1928-29 Australian season which mentioned this. It said he was a New Zealander who had travelled extensively and then settled in Australia.

not sure if this post is still active but I was trying to find any ref to my grandda Harry Gresty who I knew was a dirt track rider in manchester and came across this page. I think your H.Gresty at White City is probably him. He was born in 1903 so that would make it about right.

 

I would love any other info you might have.

My Nan is going home now to get all the details off his birth certificate/ death certificate, but from the top of her head details are;

 

Harry Evans of welsh nationality but moved to Birmingham where my Nan was born.

Died in 1938 (will confirm later) in an RTA in Birmingham.

My nan used to live in Great Barr and remembers him racing at Perry Barr track

She believes he raced with his brother (name unknown)

She seems to think he had a norton??

 

Any help would be appreciated my nan is now in her mid 70s and has few memories of her father, so I love to help her find out more. If I could find some pictures that would be amazing.

 

On a personal note I am a keen motorcyclist myself so delving into this family history is amazing.

Doesn't really tie-up.If he died in 1938 and your nan was 3 years old,she couldn't have seen him at Perry Bar as it only ran in 1929-30 then had a 40 year break.

She was 3 lol. Just had a chat with her and it is more like she was told he raced at perry Barr. At 3 she only has vague memories of him.
