From what i've heard about the place , we'd all need a lottery win to attend it . Cardiff is great , i love the place , but if a track can be laid in the Millenium stadium - then why not Murrayfield . 21st century heathen Posted July 4, 2008 Report Share Posted July 4, 2008 I've been to Edinburgh and like the City. If I could afford two 'big' GP's then I would be happy to go there. I still think that going to two high price events would be out of reach for too many people, and that a second GP in Britain would have to be at a more reasonable rate on a 'normal' track. I am not trying to upset Scottish or Welsh fans here (honest), but why not have an English GP at Wembley and alternate between Cardiff, Hampden and Murrayfield for a British GP? :takecoversmillie: My only problem with Cardiff is access and hotels. Londons hotels and tube would easily stand up to a GP. I was at the England V Scotland Euro '96 game, and there was plenty of pubs, bars, etc to keep 80 odd thousand entertained in and around Wembley. I would love to see speedway back at wembley and fully agree with sw17 bulldog about alternating between Cardiff and Edinburgh Or Glasgow for a second gp or even alternate between all three venues to keep the event fresh. paul666 Posted July 5, 2008 Report Share Posted July 5, 2008 Hi All, Sorry if I misled anyone, but I believed that the stadium was fully weatherproof, I've watched them moving the roof back and forth a number of times, and this was mentioned in the press when the motor racing was held there. Why not hold a GP at one of the larger English Football clubs (I do not follow football so don't know the sizes of different stadiums) during the closed season, when they all seem to tear their pitches up to relay them. I sure the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United would be happy with the extra income generated by the event. Also I don't think the local hotels would try and rip us off like they do in Cardiff, it's this that puts me off the Welsh city. The main gripe that the RFL have is with Cardiff City Council in that they take the money but did not keep there side of the bargain by not promoting the event. Some locals did not have a clue what was happening over the weekend. Last weekend was the same in that none of the locals we spoke to knew that the speedway GP was on, some of them did not know what speedway was Speedway needs to find somewhere where it can be better marketed both by itself and the local council ! Cardiff is a must now. Particularly, as stated earlier, because I do really like the City. If the second were held at a regular speedway track at a reasonable cost I would almost certainly go, depending on the location and travel conditions on the day. The traffic access is pants, there's not a great choice of pubs, and in the stadium isn't it about £8 for a burger and £4 for a beer? I'd far rather go to Edinburgh if we were looking to use a temporary track in a large stadium; now that it is a great place to spend a weekend! fatface Posted July 7, 2008 Report Share Posted July 7, 2008 (edited) There is nothing wrong with the Millenium Stadium itself. In fact, it is ideal for staging the 'main' event of the SGP calendar. The problem is actually getting to it, and the attractiveness of the location in the minds of the casual fan. I don't understand this notion that it is hard to get to. I've travelled to the Cardiff GP from Edinburgh (when i lived there) and London (where i now live) and have found it very easy to get to from both locations, be it by plane or by train. The journey takes a maximum of 3 hrs door-to-door. The beauty of it is once you are there, you are there. You don't have to worry at all about transport...pubs, restaurants, shopping and stadium are all located centrally. Once you've got there..all you have to worry about is your feet. As for the casual fan..well I'm one of them..I must take in about 3/4 meetings a year and one of them is always Cardiff. I've been every year bar one...so it's attractive enough for me. I don't think I'm alone either, there are lots of people I meet there who come out with the common line "I used to go all the time, but now I just come to Cardiff." As for Wembley..my fear would be two-fold.. a) we'd end up spreading ourselves too thin if we went with Cardiff and Wembley in the same year..people would go to one or the other and both crowds would suffer b ) London is such a vibrant city with a million and one things going on every weekend, our sport would get a little lost...in Cardiff, it really feels like it is speedway GP weekend Edited July 7, 2008 by falcace Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

But parking, access et al is shocking. Went along to watch Quins RL as normal on Saturday to be faced with traffic and parking chaos as Iron Maiden were playing at Twickenham.
