stevehone
Les was no 3 in the world once you're doing him down a bit Davy.... he was actually #2 in '82, and could have won it had the referee made the correct decisions... Lioness
I have to agree with DavyH's synopsis now though Steve. I never saw Les race in his heyday but even 5 years ago he was still an absolute joy to watch. Now its just upsetting when you see him trail in third and fourth against riders who in many cases will never go any higher than they are presently. I suppose thats part of the reason I will be happy in a strange sort of way if Peter Carr goes out at the top.....be it this year or next ;-)
stevehone
i wasn't disagreeing with LC possibly being past his best...just that Davy said he was 3rd in a world final when he was actually 2nd
sandman
Correct Steve, you talk about close to winning it, he was brilliant on the night. Also, for my last comment on the subject, a racer is only as good as his last race, and supporters have a long memory. Isnt it better to be remembered at your peak than on the down hill slide? And to add to this, I loved watching Soren and Christer race. Hard chargers the both of them.. May God bless the both of them, and rest in peace fellas, many good memories.. Thanks for correcting me Steve, you're right. The sensible thing for a rider to do is quit at the top, but the temptation for 'just one more season' must be immense. As Lioness said it is so sad seeing Les on one of his ever more frequent off-days. Suppose though it's down to the individual rider, if they're still enjoying it, they'll keep going. Guest big al
Sorens' 3rd at Wembley in the 60's World Final included 4 wins and a fall. He could have been a World Champion if the dice had stacked up right. He was my favourite rider when I was a nipper at Hyde Road. There used to be classic battles between Soren and Tommy Roper (teammates lol) - both wanted to start off the outside gate, and whilst Tommy could ride a wider line than anyone, Soren could do suicide dives across the bends which meant other riders had to avoid him and give way. Soren and Tommy were great characters for Belle Vue. I remember Soren drove an (apparently) untaxed Merc.
fatface
Really I dont want to belabour the point, but recently I came across an interesting article that was in a medical journal, that basically said anyone who has suffered concussions over time was something like three times more likely to suffer depression in later years, than people who havent, and since we all know that is part and parcel of the sport, was wondering if this could have something to do with it. Anyone know what happened to Chris Pusey? I just heard he was deceased, and was wondering if anyone knew how? Just remember his gritty performances for Belle Vue as Captain. :? Ahhh,... The Polka Dot Kid, hard as nails..... Chris Pusey died fairly recently. I think if you do a search on the Manchester Evening News site - you might get your answer how. sandman
hey falcace, was really saddened to find out Chris passed away last year at 51. i never did find out how except long illness. Speedway can be cruel to its former heroes. he was so full of bravado and life, and it just, well,, really is sad. it sickens me, i think his whole lifes ambition was to be Captain of Belle Vue. He was old school, him and Wilkie both. Ah, but some good memories left behind which is more than some of us can say. We miss ya Chris.. Brett Garrigan
Just to set the record straight as there seems to be a bit of confusion here. Christer was sadly killed in track action in Australia. He lost his life whilst riding at the Brisbane Exhibition Grounds in 1979. mickthemuppet
Although there are many sad stories of the early demise of Speedway riders there are a hell of a lot who live to a grand old age

Guest
Christer Sjosten, who rode for Poole, on the left. The other rider is Kai Niemi. Edited June 9, 2017 by Guest
bruno
I remember a meeting back in the mid 70s when Soren had a fisticuffs with Cribby, any Heathens remember that. As a teenager I thought it was terrific entertainment. I'm sure the meeting was a draw and they both came out after best of buddies

BobC
I remember Brum v Poole.Christer was inside Soren and they both went into the fence by the pit gate. Both laying still for a moment, then big Arthur Browning got involved. He literally stepped over the fence and started on Christer! Quite funny seeing Arthur then being pushed away by Soren! :-)
