Zenon Plech

I was going through some old videos featuring Zenon and transferring them to DVD the other day, when it got me thinking that I don't remember Zenon racing beyond 1983 /4 ish, he wasn't that old, so why did he stop, was it injury?

Anyone know?

In 1986 he was 5th in the Polish league averages and 6th in the Polish Championship. In 1987 he made a few appearances in the Polish league. Both years he was riding for Gdansk. As he was born in 1953 he would have been 33 or 34 on retiring.

In the years prior to the collapse of Berlin Wall and communism we saw very few Polish riders. (There was a gap of something like 7/8 years between Piotr Pyszny and Jacek Remapla riding in the British League)

I remember him been at Sheffield in the early 80's, but he was way past his best by then, I remember him when he burst on the scene, he was very much the Tomas Gollob of his day.

And should have been World Champ...

Am I alone in hoping that Tomas himself capitalises on what I understand (with my limited knowledge/interest in the so-called GPs) has been a good start in the series which now carries the title of the World Championship and becomes the champ this year.

Empirically, it's indisputable Gollob IS the best rider never to be World Champ....

Maybe Norbold would dispute that

Plech seemed to shine brightly for only a short period of time.Naturally imo he was never as good as Steady Eddie B)
