Brian Hamilton
This is a long shot, but can anyone recall a rider with a surname of Dunphy of Dumphy who rode (not sure what level) at Harringay around the late 1940s and early 1950s? Barcroftlad
This is a long shot, but can anyone recall a rider with a surname of Dunphy of Dumphy who rode (not sure what level) at Harringay around the late 1940s and early 1950s? According to my schoolboy notes in my scrap book from that era, the Harringay team in 1949 was: Vic Duggan (capt), Wal Morton, Lloyd Goffe, Ray Duggan, Jimmy Grant, Geoff Pymar, Nobby Stock (res) and Dennis Dunton (res). I can't recollect the name Dunphy. Cheers.

norbold
Sorry norbold it wasnt Danny. This guy may have been just a novice or second half rider! I wasn't referring to your original question, Brian, I was referring to a slight but important (from Danny's point of view anyway!) error speedyguy made which he has now corrected. Or that people tell a porky now and again. Worked with a bloke who often came out with story when we were working nights...."The greatest feeling in the world, running out onto the Wembley pitch........"Reckoned he played a few games as a goalie for England schoolboys. After a couple of years hearing this and hearing people who had seen him play in goal at a works footie tournament i sent a letter off to the F.A.Got a reply on headed paper back saying that no -one of this name had ever played for England at any level.Showed it to a few of my colleague. One of whom must have spilt the beans,as he never again came out with the story while i was in his company

norbold
When I was at school there was a boy called Tony Swaby who said he played in a group (as bands were called then!) called the Monotones. In 1963 they had a minor hit with a cover version of "Wipe Out" by the Surfaris and their photograph appeared in the Record Mirror, but surprisingly Tony was not featured in the line-up. When we showed him the photograph he said that he hadn't been very well on the day they took the photo!
star ghost
They are some good tales now on this thread, some are almost as good as "Who invented Speedway" At Norwich we had it round the other way ............ A chap named Reggie Derisley came to Dick Wise for a trial. He didn't do too bad and Dick decided to give him a chance. Dick said you cant use your name as a Speedway rider and so he christened the new man "Charlie Smith". So Reggie actually rode speedway for about 3 years but his name never shows in the record books
