iris123
Seems the news from the German forum is that speedway is to finish at Wiener Neustadt.Seems a new guy has bought the stadium and wants to make it suitable for the Austrian Football league. That means no space for a speedway track. Also seems once again tha neighbours have been complaining about the noise of the speedway.Austrian speedway isn't exactly strong but to lose one of their few tracks is a major blow to the sport in the country
Conkers
Ironic that this track is going, when the Austrian Ice Racing scene is rising thanks mainly to Franky Zorn's success. Perhaps Austrian Speedway needs someone to have similar success to drag Speedway back up again.

Everybody associated with the track was extremely friendly, and they did put on a good event at the local Hotel, the night before the meeting

Memories of Fritz Dirtl, Karl and Leo Killymayer, and Josef Kamper especially. A sad time indeed for Austrian speedway.

Sorry I have the Vienna stadium name wrong - what was the name of the Vienna track in the 1940s and 1950s?
iris123
Wiener Neustadt isn't one of those old times venues, speedyguy. Those old stars did race in Vienna, and those capital tracks are long gone. Looking through Brian Collins' excellent site it seems the Killmayers did ride in Wiener Neustadt. Now whether that is the same track i don't know. What was interesting is that i found they had ridden against each other in an unofficial test match. One rode for England(2nd.Div) and the other for Australia(2nd.Div)!!!!Those were the days when you could just ride for anyone.Didn't Neil Street put in an appearance for Yugoslavia And was this the Vienna track in days gone by? Bavarian
Whoops! I used to be in touch with Prof Franz Renisch and Trude Jaeger. Sorry I have the Vienna stadium name wrong - what was the name of the Vienna track in the 1940s and 1950s? The big international meetings that Prof. Renisch promoted all took place in Vienna's premier sports stadium, then known as the "Prater Stadion" or simply as the "Wiener Stadion". The Stadium is still there, but has been modernised and been given a new name, the "Ernst Happel Stadion" named after one of Austria's most prominent football coaches. It hosts the big International football games, but does not have a club team play there on a regular basis (except for big derby clashes or UEFA Cup etc). Much like Wembley in England. In the 1970's when Bubi Bossner led the revival of speedway in Austria, there was racing in another (much smaller) football stadion in Vienna, the "Stadion Hohe Warte" (home of Vienna Football Club) and for a short period at a place called ASKO-X. In the mid-1970's speedway lost its tracks in Vienna and re-settled in the surrounding areas, such as Wiener Neustadt, some 40km south of the city. There may have been occasional speedway meetings at Wiener Neustadt in earlier times, but I am not aware of this. Certainly if so, those were rather low key events not to be compared with the big shows in Vienna that attracted crowds of 30 or 40,000.
