jules m
‘Young Lions’ Roar at the Wessex This Saturday we welcome the stars of the future to the Wessex Stadium as the Weymouth club kicks off the 2008 season with the last of the qualifying rounds of the Great Britain Under 21 Championship. This opening meeting for Weymouth speedway promises to be a night to remember where the stakes are high, with all riders aiming to book themselves a place in the final at to be held at Lakeside on the 25th April. Pre-meeting favourites and last years finalists - Lee Smart and Mark Baseby will both be hoping to repeat their previous success, with Daniel Halsey and Barry Burchatt aiming to go one better than last season which saw them both reach the semi-final. However, as part of the Somerset Rebels contribution to junior racing, promoter Mike Golding established a tie with Polish club - Czestochowa enabling members of the Somerset’s junior racers some valuable overseas experience. Kyle Newman, Brendan Johnson, Matt Bates and Andrew Braithwaite have been getting in some early season practice in Poland this week which should set them in good stead for their assault on the qualifying round. Speaking from Poland, Brendan Johnson said they have been very impressed with the way speedway is approached at the Extraleague club “We have been learning about set-ups and Czestochowa organised a junior UK v Poland meeting for us. We have all been very impressed with the approach to speedway over here and can’t wait to return to England and get this years campaign started” ‘Young Lions’ co-ordinators – Graham Reeve and # Name Removed # will be in attendance and will not doubt be keeping a close eye on the action, where there may very well be a future World Champion in the making. The meeting starts at 7.15pm at the Wessex Stadium this Saturday 12th April.
