Lots of riders have only ever ridden 1 match, but there must have been a rider who perhaps crashed on the first bend ( or even looped at the tapes) of his first ever League race, got injured and then never rode another League match. Knowle Posted February 16, 2008 Report Share Posted February 16, 2008 I nominate Lew Philp who crashed in his first and only match for St.Austell at Sheffield in 1963 in his only ride. Also I remember Reg Craven who was sadly fatally injured in a pile up on the first bend of the first heat of what I believe to be the first meeting at Poole in 1948 but it was not his only meeting. There was also a rider by the name of Pedersen I believe who was programmed to ride for Bristol in their first meeting at Wolverhampton in 1977 but arrived too late and was never asked back. Dybeck turned up at Blunsdon but was told to poke it when he demanded more cash. Penny did actually make 1 League appearance for Stoke (scored 0), they did sign a rider called Fredrik Pettersson who never actually rode a meeting after getting the push after Press and Practice day. spin king Posted February 17, 2008 Report Share Posted February 17, 2008 I remember in 1980 , Sheffield signed two Polish riders, one Weislaw Patynek rode one meeting at Eastbourne for the club, and then injuried his back ride the training track, and never rode for the club again. mervjankefanclub Posted February 18, 2008 Report Share Posted February 18, 2008 i remember glasgow "signing" mark fiora and dick barrie interviewing him on the centre green but he p!ssed off to the moanarchs before riding for us we also signed german tommy dunker during the shawfield era but red tape kept him out i think we also signed hungarian csaba hell who never rode we also brought over aussie michael carter at the start of 1991 he had one or two second half outings at shawfield i think then was in the team at loomer road suffered a broken ankle and we never seen him again he looked a decent prospect aswell Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Any nominations.?? David Osborn's Wimbledon CL career more or less meets the criteria you were looking for exactly. David rode in heat one of the Dons’ first ever match in the Conference (and first match for over 10 years) up at Peterborough in March 2002. He crashed on bend one of lap one and withdrew injured. He did reappear for another away match, this time up at Buxton, three months later but lasted only one lap again. That was two matches, two starts, no finishes, and - self-evidently - no points.. David had 20 or so appearances for a range of clubs including Mildenhall & Rye House before his ill-fated (and final)campaign on 2002, though.... Another David who was pointless for a team I followed was Dave Howard who rode in both of the Crayford Kestrels' first two NNL matches (against Crewe away and Boston at home) in 1975. He failed to score and was never heard of or seen again. I always thought it odd that team photos taken at that time said it was Dave Howard when the rider pictured was clearly the man who succeeded Howard as reserve, Bill Archer. Peter Posted February 18, 2008 Report Share Posted February 18, 2008 Reading Parsloes' post about David Osborne jogged my memory about a rider called Brian Allner who rode for Eastbourne Starlets. The 1996 Conference League yearbook gives a few lines about each riders season. For Brian it says "Suffered the worst possible debut in September, crashing in his first competitive ride and being knocked unconscious. Mike Carter rode in a Gold Cup match for Glasgow at Stoke and was injured in I think his 4th ride. Glasgow have had a few riders who have "signed" but didn't ride:Paul Thorp, Mark Fiora ,Tommy Dunker, Hell and Leon Madsen. Eric Broadbelt's Glasgow career in 1985 lasted longer as R/R than actual riding.He was injured on the first bend of his only home match but I'm sure he rode an away match somewhere(Middlesbrough?)
