You can get a nice pint of best at Ron How's pub The Red Lion in Little Missenden, Bucks which reopened this year after a major fire a year or so ago. Danny Dunton was alive & seemingly well when last seen walking down Chesham High Street just before Christmas.

I know Danny Dunton is still alive but heard he was wheelchair bound after an accident

That's what i thought and was surprised to hear that he was seen walking at Christmas...?? He lost a leg didn't he..: would be terrific news if he's up and about and walking with an artificial leg. Does anyone know more details..??

On 12 July 1955 in the National Trophy match v Norwich Ron had 2 rides as number 8 for West Ham. The programme editorial said that West Ham were giving him a chance in his comeback after 4 years out. The League was run on 7-a-side so Ron was the additional rider needed. In heat 4 the finishing order was Harry Edwards, Terry Courtnell, Don Lawson, Ron Johnson. Ron's second ride was in heat 14 and Harry & Don were gifted a 5 - 0 for us when Terry and Ron both fell.

In the second leg on 16 July at the Firs Stadium Ron took second place in heat 4 behind Don with Fred Brand in third from Terry. Ron was put out in heat 11 as replacement for Alan Smith but trailed in last. Hardly surprising really. The finishing order was Ove Fundin, Aub Lawson, Split Waterman in that race. In heat 14 Ron finished at the back again in a 3 - 3.

Peter Morrish in his 1946 - 1964 book shows Ron as scoring just 1 point in League Matches for West Ham and in his season review for West Ham he says Ron's attempted comeback was "painful for his admirers" I suppose Ron also rode a number of second half,s that season also.

I hope this is of use to you Ray

I thought that Ron Johnson was Australian and a top class rider, till he had a bad accident and returned to Australia to recuperate. Against advice he returned and was given a team place by Johnnie Hoskins at New Cross, but failed to regain his past form, Johnnie got his son Ian who ran Meadowbank to give Ron a trial with the same results. Ron spent some time doing odd jobs at the track before moving on. I have a feeling I shall soon find out if my memory is as bad as the wife says. Just got back from Brighouse shopping and forgot to get 2 items. Regards to all.

HarryA, i know Brighouse, it used to have a great nightclub.

You mentioning Ian Hoskins reminds me of some more useless information. Ian used to be a TV Extra and appeared in several TV shows!!!

Brighouse has changed a lot in the last few years, Sugdens flour mill, the large(too large?) CO-OP have both shut and awaiting redevelopment. The Ritz ballroom which was up for sale a while back, may have been rescued, and Tesco have moved onto the old cricket ground. Going back to the Hoskins i remember being at Canterbury with Middlesbrough, and Johnnie as usual was shouting lets have these bikes out, I pointed out a large pile of dirt going into the 1st bend, Johnnie turned to me and shouted there is nothing wrong with the track it's a lot better than Middlesbrough. It gave me some pleasure to remind him that he had laid the track there in 1928. Regards.

When I was researching my New Cross book, I came across a reference in 1960, when Johnson was making his last comeback, that he had ridden for West Ham in 1955, but it didn't give any details, so thanks, star ghost.

What amazed me even more about Johnno's comebacks was that he asked Lansdale and Mawdsley about making a comeback for the Provincial League New Cross team in 1963. Lansdale and Mawdsley even bought him a flat near the track in readiness, but the Control Board wouldn't give him a license. Very wise, I'd say.

He was not given a team place. He rode in second halfs and captained the Colts team in one match against Edinburgh, where he scored three points from one win.

Taken from Bert Harkins report on V.S.R.A. Dinner March 2005 :- Our new President Danny Dunton made a terrific effort to walk into the dinner on his "new leg" following that serious motorcycle accident last year, and had a great ovation from the gathered guests. :approve:

Not wishing to be pedantic buy I always thought Ron How's pub in Little Missenden was the Crown Inn. The last time I walked through the village (earlier this year) the name over its door was Martin (I think) How so it is still in the family.

Remember the team named very well and often think that John Bishop had the ability to be a big star. If he made the gate he was as fast as anyone else and would not be caught but tended to feel threatened when other riders were in close proximity and allow them past too easily. I wonder how much influence his Dad had on him as he always seemed to be over concerned whilst he was racing and this must have got through to John.
