BOBBATH
Bostonfive, yes I do have some info mate-if Tigertom reads this -he will probably know more. Last year(2006) at Paris speedway I had the privilege af attending the Canadian Championship Final -won by Kyle Legault with a maximum and he also broke the track record about three times. It was a wonderful evening made even better by a special presentation to the much loved Stan Bradbury on the occasion of his 80th birthday,Stan has been here since the late fifties.I got talking to Stan at the meeting and in fact asked him about Alan Kidd.Alan lives in Cambridge, Ontario and Stan has his phone number somewhere. If I see Stan at Paris next summer I will certainly ask him-but with this info you might be able to track him down yourself thru internet phone inquiries. Other speedway riders living in Canada include Tony Armstrong(Stan's son-in- law), Mike Tams I think is still alive in Toronto, but Bob Fisher and Dave Dodd I think have both passed away. If you go to the website Canadian Speedway Racing Association-bet they can help you further-and they are a real friendly and helpful bunch(includes a lot of ex Brits). Hey Bob, Don't think Bob Fisher would appreciate being classed as "Passed Away"....in actual fact I had an email from him yesterday...he still visits Paris on occasions and still very interested in our great sport. Mike Tams is also still alive..for sure......though I don't know about Dave Dodd Edited February 12, 2008 by andout
BOBBATH
Sorry Andout,I am mortified about this misinformation from me-glad Bob is still with us tho'-I hope I am wrong about Dave Dodd too-though I am sure I heard he passed away. This has got me thinking-does Bob live in a small town in Ontario-something like Sterling or Sunderland, I am sure that I heard of another ex Brit rider who passed away -this will really bother me-but glad to be wrong.Next time you e-mail Bob pass on my apologies I am sure he will have a chuckle, perhaps you could let me know if he knows about Dave Dodd. TigerTom
I believe Dave Dodd died of cancer some time ago! Have not sen Alan Kidd at Paris he did ride here in Canada t the old defunct Dundas track. I have a programme from the track compliments of Duncan Luke. Although I don't call what I am doing now living the rumours of my demise are greatly exaggerated!!!! Decided to give up riding after the end of last season Bob so I am now an ex rider yet again! (although some will say I was never a rider! ) I really need to set aside the time to visit Mike Tamms and get his life as a rider and promoter on tape. If you want a full list of Canadian riders and other ntionals who rode in Canada the full list can be found at:- http://www.canadianspeedway.com/riders2.htm Compiled by Roger Stevens and Duncan Luke Tiger Tom.... There was a lengthy feature on Mike Tams in VSM about 18 months ago, and he was also mentioned in the most recent edition of VSM in a feature on Canadian riders who have raced in the UK. There's also a bit about Mike and his brother Les on http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/oldtimespeedway which has been dealing in some depth with the career of Charlie Appleby. He was a Canadian who never raced in his homeland and died in a crash while riding for Birmingham at Newcastle in October 1946. dave kidd
Hi there. I am new to this forum and have been looking around with great interest. I noticed here that Allan Kidd's name was mentioned. Indeed he is very well and about to celebrate his 80th birthday on June 25th. He has just returned from another visit to England where Poole honored him along with three other riders from that era. I know much of this because I am his son, David. Although I have never rode, I had always wished that my dad would have steared me in that direction. I suppose it's never to late to try. My dad and mom (Valerie) did do those commercials for those cigarettes and in fact have all of the original photos from that. My dad still loves to talk about that time of his life and you can see the excitement in his eyes. His only regret was selling his gear here in Canada. We have often talked about that and I am trying to locate a bike from that time period to honor him. Tough task, I know. My mom did do some modeling back in the day and you are correct, she was from Bournemouth. Maybe I can get some pictures from him of his racing days and post some. he doesn't use a computer, but I can certainly pass along any messages. BOBBATH
Great to hear Capt. Kidd-does Alan ever get to Paris or Brantford Speedways, Stan Bradbury is often there. Tell your dad he is remembered with great affection by all fans of a certain age.Does he still have his moustache?? Please pass on my best wishes to him and tell him his speedway career is still talked about whenever speedway people meet!!

He often watches it on the speed channel when they have it as well. No, he hasn't had the mustache for some time. It would be great to organize some sort of event down at the Paris Speedway where we could get some of these early riders out. I know he would enjoy that. He really seems to enjoy talking about that time of his life.
