I know George was on the Isle of Wight and was Team Manager of the Speedway team recently. I think he also went to the Birmingham re-opening last year.

Take a look under Speedways most travelled riders thread on this section of the forum. George was being discussed there as a possible "champion" of the subject

Yes, George moved to the IOW some time ago and is always there when we visit. I believe he had heart trouble not so long ago and needed treatment. Perhaps the other invalid, Bryn, will update us when he is home and online.

When George rode for the Diamonds in 1961, he came off on the first bend and someone rode across his face badly damaging his chin area. Horrible to watch but he continued to ride afterwards and had a decent career and a canny bloke to chat with.

Always remember George from his Birmingham days. Big moustache and if I remember rightly wore yellow leathers.

Last I heard he was at Isle of Wight where he ran a pub (bed and breakfast).

No George had a pub in Cannock Staffs. in 1982,called the Unicorn. He took it on in the recession with the idea of coming out of the transport buisness but ended up running the two. he was often visited by the Oxford team when returning from their away trips in the vicinity. that was when Bernard Crapper was promoter and Ashley Pullen was one of their top guys. George came out of the pub in '85 but carried on the transport for another nine years. He sold up and moved to the Isle of Wight where his wife had taken up a teaching post. At 55 years old george retired to do a 'John Lennon' and stay at home to bring up his two young children. This did not go quite to plan though for he could not have dreamed that within a year he would be involved with speedway again.

George suffered a heart attack in 2006, but is fine now. I met him a couple of times at Perry Barr last year and he was in great spirits. He actually suffered his HA the day after we had emailed each other to arrange to meet up at Smallbrook. I didn't find out what had happened until his son James gave me the news, it was quite a shock at the time.

There's a picture of George and myself on the opening night at PB on my facebook site.

I remember when George was a reserve at Oxford his Dad used to go everywhere with him. I used to scrounge away programmes from the ridersa nd George's Dad said to me if I wanted some good ones then i should pop round the house and he would find some out for me. I was staggered whe I called round the house on my bike (they lived in Oxford) and he gave me several Aldershot & california progs.

Hope you still got them Brian! You're not a Donnington boy then Brian. Did you know that on the 'rec' behind the row of cottages opposite their house was where the 'Donnington Dons' cycle speedway track used to be. His dad was very supportive of that, helping out wherever he could. George and his brothers all rode there in the mid fifties. Very encouraging was George's dad, and George relates of when they were young boys his dad would ride his bicycle and they would run alongside to grass track and scamble meetings at Stokenchurch and Brill, taking it in turn to ride on the cross bar. Keen or what! Can you imagine that today!!

No not from Donnington, but I did ride a bit of Cycle Speedway. After the Donnington Dons though!

George's Brother Mick used to ride Cycle Spedway, but I can't remember the youngest brother's name although I can remember his face well!
