Steve has competed several times in the Short Track UK series over past three years..

But the question Kev wanted answering is, did Mr. Lomas hold the New Hammond Beck track record on that track's closure..?

Methinx, Mimmo will be attracted to this post's evocative title before too long and will then reveal all!! ;)

The final meeting ever staged at New Hammond Beck Road was on the 1st August 1987 with the Barracudas losing out to Eastbourne 23-55 in a National League encounter.

It's true that Steve Lomas was the last ever track record holder, with a time of 60.0 seconds, that he recorded on the 12th September 1982.

The scorers from that meeting were as follows: -

BOSTON: Andy Hines 9 Jon Cooper 6 Andy Fisher 4 Mark Lyndon 3 Garry Clegg 1 Anthony Hulme 0 Chris Mulvihill 0

(Team manager: - Mick Hines)

EASTBOURNE: Martin Dugard 12 Gordon Kennett 11 Andy Buck 11 Dean Standing 9 Keith Pritchard 7 Kevin Pitts 3 Darren Standing 2

(Team manager: - Russell Lanning)

The meeting was refereed by Mr G.A.Dalby

Boston Officials for that final meeting were:-

CLERK OF THE COURSE: Alec Louth

PITS MARSHAL: Peter Burton

COLOUR MARSHAL: Colin Swan

STARTING MARSHAL: Kevin Knott

ASSISTANT STARTING MARSHAL: Bob Brown

MACHINE EXAMINER: Mark Eurich

TIMEKEEPER: Steve Parker

ELECTRICIAN: Steve Parker

COACH: Mick Hines

MEDICAL OFFICER: Mr M.S.K. Bisimil

ANNOUNCER: Mike Bennett (So you see folks, old golden tonsils really is as old as he looks!!)

I hope that answers some of the questions that are being sought.

Blimey Ken, have you come into yet more money and replaced your zimmer frame that I knicked from you a few years ago when we were filming at Boston (Norfolk Arena)!!! :D

Hope you're well mate.

Keep checking the speedwayplus site. A mate of mine is gonna put some pics of the track on it.

They're on the Speedway Plus site now. Fireblade was asking me when they were taken - I believe I took them before disappearing off to college, and if it was from that summer that would make it 1979. It was definitely seventies judging by the fashions of the spectators. Unfortunately I never noted a date on the back of the photos which (less than) helpfully say "Made on Kodak paper"!!!

Now about those seashells.........did I imagine them?

As a Boston regular....the seashells were mainly on the paths around the perimeter of the track and there were loads in the car park too.

Steve Lomas was the track record holder when we closed at 60.0.

Bruce Cribb was the all time holder at 56.0...but this was set on a four lap demonstration ride on his ice bike.

Gordon Parkins was the front man at Norwich for a number of years and also worked for West Ham when the Norwich Stars closed at the end of the 1964 season. He was announcer at Kings Lynn for a while and I think he stood in for Martin Rogers at times also. He passed away in Pilgrim Hospital at a Xmas time some years back.

gordon parkins arrived at west ham in 1970 to replace dave lanning. i remember him standing on the centre green with christer lofqvist before his debut for the hammers. this was my first ever meeting at custom house and lofqvist became one of my favourite riders despite me being a dons fan. i could not believe some ten years later in 1980 during my first visit to boston hearing gordon parkins on the mic again, a very unforgettable voice.
