scarletrider
Does anyone have any info on Bernie Aldridge, who he rode for and when. I know that he rode a few meetings for Sunderland in 1971, and I reckon he must have been 50 ish at the time, as he is now around about 80 yrs old. norbold
Funnily enough I have been discussing Bernie Aldridge with speedyguy as we are trying to determine whether he rode for New Cross under the name Bob Aldridge in 1951, or whether that is someone else. Any information will be gratefully received.

speedyguy
Do "Chestnut Tigers" ring a bell ? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> There was some lengthy discussion about him recently on http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/oldtimespeedway where it claims he was also known (?) as Bernie and Berne Aldridge. Swindon was also given as one of his tracks, while he also had a brief spell at Oxford in 1949. The first major club Bob Aldridge came up with was New Cross in 1951, as Norbold has mentioned. An intriguing character - if the trio all prove to be the same rider! Edited January 5, 2008 by speedyguy

speedyguy
Yes I have a photograph which is signed Bernie Aldridge and a note which says High Beach v Chestnut Tigers <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That match would probably have been in the very late 1940s. And is Bernie Aldridge also Berne Aldridge and Bob Aldridge or - were there brothers Bob and Bernie Aldridge? And was the 'Berne' forename a spelling error? http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/oldtimespeedway

When he rode for Sunderland in 1971, we christened him "Bernie the Bolt". Used to travel all the way up to the NE in a mini pick-up just on the off-chance he might get a race. I guess he was just a guy that loved to race bikes. "Keep well Bernie"
Canadian Star
As far as i know he currently lives in Devon and keeps pigeons. At least i know someone who stayed with him about 4-5 years ago, and that was the situation then.

Letchy
Any chance of a copy of that photograph, I will pay any cost? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Let me dig it out scarletrider and I'll get a copy sorted out for you. It's only black and white, taken from the old pits at Rye House, just before the third bend.
