star ghost
The last I heard was that Sandor the Magnificent Magyar was back home in Hungary
BOBBATH
Sorry to resurrect this-but just found out Sandor Levai passed away in 2009-any other news of the Wasps of the mid sixties? Amazingly enough when I lived in Illinois in 1968-70, I mentioned the team name to my then American girlfriend(from Oklahoma) and she collapsed laughing-when I asked why she said that in US "Wasp" meant White Anglo Saxon Protestant!! Oh well what can you do!!
Guest
Here's an interesting insight into the career of the popular Hungarian rider the late Sandor Levai, written by Brian Buck. I enjoyed reading it very much and recall having brief dealings with Levai and Zoltan Zeke when they first arrived in Britain in 1956. http://www.speedwayplus.com/MyMateAlec.shtml Edited December 11, 2016 by Guest
Guest
::: By JOHN HYAM IN the mid-1950s, Hungary was very much a backwater in speedway. It was with some surprise, therefore, when two of their riders, Sandor Levai and Zeke Zoltan, contacted me at ‘Speedway Star’ through a third party. Both had arrived in Britain around November 1956, after the Russian army stifled a freedom movement in their native Budapest. As both were staying in Manchester, I didn’t get any more involved than passing on their names and addresses to Belle Vue. Sandor battled for some years to get established and ended his career with distinction in British speedway - Stoke, Belle Vue and Newport were all well served by him. Sadly, Zoltan disappeared after a handful of novice races at Belle Vue.
