KevH
Can anyone tell the track record, holder and date set at the end of 1971 when the club moved to Ellesmere Port please? And what were the clubs' colours?
Guest Steve Dixon
Only record i can find is 75.0 secs 418 yds set by Eric Broadbelt 23 08 70. Club colours were Blue Red and White.
KevH
Thanks for that Steve, I know that record stood at the end of 1970, so I guess it wasn't beaten in 1971.
HarryA
Talking of records, Rochdale only lost 2 matches at home, I happened to be the Team Manager both times, firstly with Middlesbrough, going into the last heat 2 points up and getting a 3/3. Peter Collins the winner, with the late Bruce Forrester 2nd and Framk Auffret 3rd. 2 weeks later I was asked to look after Rayleigh and got the same result, despite Dingle Brown being excluded for foul riding, this was incorrect as there was a slick patch going into the 1st bend, and he pulled a locker, there was no contact with anyone and Dingle did well to stay on, the referee must have thought he did it on purpose. KevH
And what a memory you have Harry. Can you confirm Broadbelt was still the track record holder at the end of 1971, and any idea why Rochdale never completed their home KO Cup Semi Final tie against Crewe? Not sure but were not the Hornets the orginal Belle Vue Colts or the Hornets became the Colts.
star ghost
Belle Vue Colts became Rochdale Hornets I remember the Colts having an upside down triangle with B V C printed on it for the team colours As with the Colts, Kings Lynn ran a second team in the Second Division, until going to Boston which was opened by Cyril Crane. This was in the early years of British League, Division Two, in the late 60's
moxey63
Got two Rochdale racejackets and a Belle Vue Colts' one.

moxey63
Steve One of the Rochdale bibs belonged to Paul Tyrer, the other was worn by various riders. The Colts one I believe was Ken Eyre's. Not getting rid of them either. Sorry.

fireblade
This venue was laso used by the Rugby team of the same name until the 80's they then moved to Spotland. Incidently I have a Hornets Body colour as well, I say have but it actually belongs to a mate of mine who appears to have forgotten where it is lol. KevH
Belle Vue Colts became Rochdale Hornets And consequently the Rochdale Hornets became the Ellesmere Port Gunners.
FAST GATER
And consequently the Rochdale Hornets became the Ellesmere Port Gunners. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The first promoters were Ian Thomas and former rider Graham Tatersall ( team manager aswell) of the Gunners that is if my memory serves me right. 25yearfan
Ellesmere Port stadium still stands to this day. Tony Mole was twice turned down in 2001 when trying for planning permission there despite strong local support, which was evident at the very well attended public meetings they had. The reasons given for turning the application down were parking issues and the dreaded noise aspect though speedway had been staged there up until the end of 1985 from 1972 when the bikes were much more noisier. I'm sure that CL or even lower budget PL racing could work at Ellesmere Port.
