The rescheduled date of the event is next Saturday, August 30th at 1900h. John Postlethwaite, Chief Executive, Benfield Sports International, rights holders of the world championship series, said: “From a racing point of view it was the only decision we could make. It is not fair to decide a world championship on a track like we had tonight. There were mitigating circumstances and mistakes made and the rain on Thursday and Friday combined with the cancellations of practice exacerbated the problems we had. If we had had practice on Friday we would have been aware of the problems earlier and been able to take earlier action. “I have noted that SVEMO, the Swedish federation, have taken public responsibility for the poor state of the track but this of little consolation to the speedway public at large. “The people I feel most devastated for are the fans who have put a lot of energy into supporting us and speedway’s revival. This will only make me more determined to make sure that none of these problems will ever arise again. I would like to apologise to everybody and I hope that we are able to put a meeting to be proud of on a new track surface here at Ullevi next weekend." Anyone who cannot make it back to Ullevi next weekend will be fully refunded with both the ticket price and stadium booking fees. The track was prepared by SVEMO, whose spokesperson Rolf Sundberg admitted at the press conference immediately after the event that mistakes had been made. FIM Race Director, Ole Olsen, whose track building team have been responsible for the excellent surface at PARKEN Stadium, Copenhagen, this year, will take over the responsibility for preparing a suitable race surface for the world championship event next Saturday night. Tickets for tonight’s event (August 23) will be valid for the Grand Prix next Saturday (August 30). Those unavailable to attend next weekend’s event can obtain a full refund at Scandinavium’s ticket office or from point of purchase from Monday August 25 at 10am or alternatively send tickets back to: Got Event AB, Ticket Office Box 349, 401 24 Gotheburg. stevehone Posted August 23, 2003 Report Share Posted August 23, 2003 it's kinda ironic about Ole and the way he deals with the riders... one of the commentators, i think Chris Louis said that Ole Olsen had to be the one calling the shots... i reckon Ole has stood in the meeting with the riders tonight in that garage, and said to them..'right you boys, i'm in charge, you're riding and thats the end of it' The irony is, how do you think Ole would have been if someone said that to him when he was riding? Ole has a fair temper and i reckon one or two referees felt the brunt of it at times. What i'm wondering is why do BSI continue with just Olsen in charge? Why not enlist the help of a number of highly respected ex-riders to form a team? If it's left to one person you are asking for trouble...at least with different opinions in there you bounce ideas off of each other to get the best of each situation. Calling it off mid meeting was like airing your dirty laundry in public ! Much better to make the decision early. I think Olsen is now too far removed from current riders ! Leg Trailer Posted August 24, 2003 Report Share Posted August 24, 2003 Now I'm the last person to defend Olsen as I think the guy is so far up his own ass he'd need a spade to dig himself out again but one thing I have noticed is that people moan about Olsen being too much of a busy body. He pokes his nose into everything and tries to be "the man", right? Now, when something goes wrong we all shout out that Olsen neglected his duties and should be hung. Can anyone else spot the inconsistancy here? Personally, I think BSI are getting an easy ride critisim-wise here but I stand to be corrected as I'm not 100% sure of their involvement. I do know that the Postlethwaite chappie seems very personable so therefore will receive less critisism than Olsen who let's face it, asks for it with his attitude. BSI promote the sport - is this right? Well last night was a farce so therefore as promotors they should not be entierly blameless surely? I'm asking questions here, not making accusations so please don't misqoute me as so many here often do.... You can assess this situation on two levels and ask who is to blame for the two points: 1) The unrideable track and who was to blame. 2) The way in which the abandoment was handled and who is to blame. Personally I think everyone involved could've made an effort to make the handling of that situation better than they did but we were all caught with our knickers down weren't we!
