norbold
Very sad to hear the news that Ken McKinlay died over the weekend. One of the top 50s/60s riders and a really excellent team man. He will be sadly missed.
Gemini
I'm very sad to hear that Norbold. I know he has been ill over the past few years, but I thought he had recovered okay after his last hospital stay. So many happy memories of his days riding for the Hunters. R.I.P Ken. Guest Dicky Arbiter
I too was lucky enough to see Ken ride and his passing will not erase the memories he, amongst others of his era, gave me.

Sloop
Really sorry to hear this. I only saw Ken in action once that I can remember when I was very young, but I still feel privileged to have done so. Thoughts are with those who were close to him. BTL
I'm sure that all Tigers fans and Scots will be saddened by this news. I had the priviledge of seeing Hurri-Ken at White City riding for the Hammers and Scotland (and guesting for Tigers too!). Thanks for the memories Ken RIP "When will we see yer likes again" (lyrics from "Flower of Scotland")
Custom House Kid
I'm very sad to hear the news about Ken! My 1st season of speedway was in 1965, when the hammers won the British League, London Cup & Knockout Cup. I was 9 years old at the time and was in awe of Ken Mac, Severre Harrfeldt, Norm (the storm) Hunter, and Molly Simmons. Severre was the heartthrobe! and Molly made the difference with his points at no 6, but the HEARTBEAT OF THE TEAM was Ken Mac the best captain and team rider ever to sit on a speedway bike! My thoughts are with his family and friends Thanks for all those wonderful memories Ken Custom House Kid
Gemini
Nothing in the Leicester Mercury again tonight so I have just 'phoned the Sports Editor and he says there will be an article about Ken in the paper tomorrow. Glad to hear this because he deserves a mention. There are still lots of Speedway fans in Leicester even if we don't have our own track any more. :-(
The_Stranger
Gem: If the Mercury print the date, time and place of the funeral, could you post that info on here. I passed the sad news on to Col Smith and Jimmy Mac, and they would both like to pay their last respects to Ken, so the info would be much appreciated. Thanks. RIP Ken. Gemini
Yes, will do that. There have been no details up to now, but I don't think Ken had any family living in Leicester did he? Will post as soon as I receive my newspaper.
Paul
Like many other people I first saw Ken McKinlay ride at West Ham in 1969.Made the bobble hat such a fashion icon! He rode with such ease, making riding a speedway bike look so easy. Ken took his trade after leaving the Hammeres in 1970 to Coventry, Oxford and finally Scunthorpe. Remember him riding at Rye House for the Stags and he really did ride like the gentleman he really was.My thoughts are with the his family and friends. RIP Ken McKinlay
Gemini
No details of Ken's funeral in the 'paper, just an article about his career, but bear with me and I will find out when someone who should know gets home from work. Have now found out and the funeral will be next Thursday 20th February, at Gilroes Crematorium, Leicester, at 10.15 am. No flowers by request, but donations if wished to the British Heart Foundation. The_Stranger
Thanks Gemini. I'll pass that info on to Col and Jimmy Mac. By the way Ken was greatly admired and respected by Jimmy.
