Stomat
Hello!I'm a fan from Latvia and I have one question for all forum members. Maybe you know, that team from Daugavpils(Latvia) in 90s took part in russian champ,in last 3 years our team was in 2nd polish league. These championships, how do you understand, are not best in the world, but in each race day at the stadium were minimally 3000 people. In Russia, for example,in Balakovo,at the stadium usually come 9000-10000 fans. In this autumn my friend gave my some DVDs with races of english Elite league. And what I saw?200 fans,500 fans...I can't understand it.The same situation in Sweden, how I know! In your country it is one of three best leagues in whole world and so small interest from fans. Why? My question is WHY? Your oppinions, please! P.S.My english isn't very good and I'm sorry for possible mistakes!
Mama
Hi Stomat! Next season your team will ride in Polish 1st league and you'll see some more fans at the stadiums there Of course it depends on capacity of the stadiums but in Polish 1st league it should be between 2000 and 10000-12000 fans at each league meeting. Of course in Extraleague there are more fans - between 5000 and 15000, and even more than 20000 at the final matches! I'm also quite surprise about the small number of fans at Britain and Sweden ... But in these countries the number of fans is quite stable and you can estimate it quite precisely before the season ... In Poland it's quite hard to do and that is one of the problems of clubs' bosses ...
Stomat
About Poland I know!Very good stadiums, very big interest to speedway in all country, good fans(but sometimes very agressive in comparison with my town)! You have also TV live broadcasts! In Sweden and GB fans also can look the races at home on TV.Maybe it is a problem! The fans don't come to the stadiums because they can see speedway on TV... Fans from GB and Sweden, what ir real reason?I want to know!

Your oppinions, please! P.S.My english isn't very good and I'm sorry for possible mistakes! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hi Stomat, First of all your English is pretty good, (certainly better than my Latvian!!!). There was a general decline in crowd numbers in English speedway over a number of years from the 1980s. I do not know why people lost interest in speedway here but it may have been something to do with the speedway authorities constant and confusing changes to the leagues and regulations, I know I stopped going to races myself for quite a long time. Now that speedway is back on TV it does seem to be creating a little more interest, but then my club Coventry have always been one of the better supported teams(figures are not published but I would guess around 2.5-3,000). This may not really answer your question, but it may kick start a bit of a discussion for you. I wish you and your team all the best for the next season. SCB
I think the biggest reason is the cost. How much does it cost to go to a meeting in Sweden, Poland, Russia and Latvia? Lets do it in terms of loaves of bread and/or pints of beer. To go to an Elite League it costs about £13, or about 5 pints of beer. Or about 3 trips to the cinema. P.S.My english isn't very good and I'm sorry for possible mistakes! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Because there is so much competition for leisure time over here. Sad to say this, but speedway has failed to reinvent itself to keep pace with all the other ways British spectators have to spend their time. It's just not as exciting or interesting, and our promoters have steadily diluted the leagues, tinkered with the rules and left many fans disillusioned. And unlike SCB, I don't agree about cost being the biggest factor. If anything, our sport has become totally devalued and underpriced to make it a viable business. Sure, there are some people for whom that is the deciding issue, but the vast majority of potential and ex-fans will probably spend much more on other leisure pursuits because speedway just doesn't cut it any more. Doesn't matter if you give it away free, you'd still not get the volume of spectators week in, week out that we had even 20 years ago. Unless the sport changes its approach, the haemmorage of spectators will continue and domestic speedway will die out as a viable entity here in the UK. Sorry - doom-mongering over, but what I say is unquestionably true.

The biggest thing between now and the 70's is surely the fact theres about 100 more TV channels and generally speaking more to do? Go to speedway or stick on a DVD? etc
MattK
I was looking at the prices of GP tickets and the Polish GPs seem a similar price to Cardiff. I would be interested to know what it costs for regular league matches in Poland, Sweden and Latvia.

Now for 2nd polish league we pay ~3-6 Euro. For international races price is higher 4-8 Euro. One program costs ~0.7-1 Euro. Recently in interview our unofficial team meneger Mr. Ribnikov said, that in the next season all prices will be higher.

Children pay between 5 and 7 Euros. The last two years it has been cheaper for me to watch the Czech GP and buy a programme than it costs to go to second division speedway at Newport!!! Stomat
My dear friends, remember, please, that Latvia isn't UK and in my country people are much more poor that in your country. In our country there're people that become only ~120 Euro in one month(it is minimal salary in Latvia). And also remember about inflation. In Latvia it is ~13-20% in the year... But,of course, not all are poor-~70% live good life. From them ~ 30% live very good.In our town we have 6 millionairs...or more...I don't know exactly. Overall situation is normal. But not all,not all can pay this small money for speedway!

Swedish matches seem to attract about the same crowds . <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Dackarna having a top home average of 5341 and Masarna being the weakest with 2345 (not counting the homeless Kaparna with 1329) I'd say Swedish matches attracted a bit more in 2007... Finnish average in the Extraliiga last season was 180 (+/- 10). Pori and Kuusankoski had crowds of over 350 with Vaasa attracting only 110 combined to their two home matches at Seinäjoki.
