Ashley Jones Memorial Meeting

On the weekend I asked who the nominated riders were and was given the following. Knowing speedway the line up is bound to change between now and then so don't shoot me if it's not 100% correct. This is from memory and hopefully there are enough brain cells still working to get the below list correct. I'm not sure what the final format will be as some of the below will be in the solo support races along with some of the sidecar boys in their section but the riders nominating thus far that I was shown are

Kevin Doolan

Cory Gathercole

Chris Holder

Richard Sweetman

Lee Herne

Jay Herne

Tom Hedley

Ricky Wallace

Tyron Proctor

Toby Proctor

Karlis Ezergailis

Chris Ferguson

Arlo Bujega

Jake Anderson

Jackson Milne

Beau Evans

Sam Dore

Brock Gates

Matt Jones (pending fitness, not sure if he is a yes or a no yet)

Daryl Spiden

Wayne Morrison

Jason Stewart

James Smith

Martin Williams

I think I'm missing one, I'm sure I was told 22 but never mind, it's certainly not anyone like Leigh Adams or Jason Crump that I'm missing. Before anyone asks Cam Woodward is on a family holiday that was booked months ago and won't be there, Ryan Sedgmen & Dakota North are both injured and a few possibles (like James Holder) are riding up in Qld on the same day in their state titles. Looks like being some decent battles at the top end of the batting order, Doolan, Holder and Gathercole are all exciting to watch and good value, and I'll be keen to see Richard Sweetman again. The Herne's, Tyron Proctor and Tom Hedley are no slouches either. Hopefully there will be a few new faces among the spectators along for the day and if there are, come up after the meeting and say hi.

Later edit

Chris Holder now withdrawn, something to do with logistical problems with brother James due to race in Qld and Chris due to race in Victoria. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement, first we missed out on seeing Chris down here at the Vic titles due to delayed arrival of machinery and now this. Jason Stewart was the one I missed, plus a couple of SSRAV locals now added to the field.

Format will be two groups of 12, four rides each, top 2 from each group to a semi final, riders 3 to 6 from each group to a repecharge final with top two from each into the semi final, then a final. Sidecar and solo support, total of 37 events.

Thanks for the info Lunchy mate - only wish I COULD bring this OLD (and yes I DO mean old as you know!) face up to the announcer after the meeting and say hi over a can or three of Bundy - please say hi to all and sundry at Broadford for me please - I know you will!

Hope all goes well.

G'day Lunchy, Ty Proctor was impressive last weekend over here, so keep an eye out for him. It just so happen's i will be in Melbourne over the weekend with a lady friend, so i'll definatley be up, not to sure about going to the speedway though. :P

Would the other rider be Nathan Hedley?

I"m gonna call Matty Jones to see if he is up for a brew on Friday night, i'll let you know if the Rooster is riding.

Tyron is always good value Ozy. He had a "Barry Crocker" at the Vic titles and will be keen to make amends this time around. On Saturday just hire a car, point it north and you will find Broadford no worries. We can also help your lady friend with a few details about you that she needs to know but you have probably been keeping quiet about ;)

I'm sure Nathan wasn't on the list I saw, then again it may have only been 21 riders, counting has never been my strong point (but then again neither has reading, writing or talking sense but never mind).

I'll probably see Matt tonight at the SSRAV monthly meeting so I'll ask him myself !!

I didn't realise it was a Saturday event, well that has definatley ruled me out, cause i'm taking my lady friend to Phantom of the Opera. :)

Should keep me in b%#^jobs for at least a year.

Just spoke to Rooster he is riding but he doesn't know how his leg is gonna hold up.

Any of you Aussie guys know what's happening with Mark Jones at the moment, is he actually riding speedway anymore? His name doesn't seem to be about much nowadays.

The short answer is I believe Mark is having a break from riding. Whether that break is intended to be temporary or permanent I don't know.

RESULTS

Kev Doolan - First

Jason Stewart - Second

Richard Sweetman - Third

Corey gathercole - Fourth

Some of the standouts of the meet:

Chris Ferguson, longtime mate of Ash, making the huge effort to "come out of retirement", all the way from Cairns to Broadford via Mildura to race at his mate's memorial;

Jason Stewart "This is a meeting I wouldn't miss";

Seeing Richard Sweetman for the first time - very impressive;

Of course seeing Kev Doolan ride & win his best mate's memorial, thanking the Jones Family for all the fun over the years, and "we all miss him";

The good size crowd that came from all over;

The give-aways of Kings Lynn paraphernalia (my daughter won a cap);

The fantastic programme and extra colour photos of Ash;

The special trophy that all competitors received for taking part;

The sidecars that spent so much time doing circle work on the infield (during the race);

All in all, another great speedway meeting at a "bush" track on a hot summer day, but especially marked by the care and respect shown by all for the memory of a fine young bloke, and importantly for the Jones (& extended) family, all of who were at the meeting.

The SSRAV can hold their head very high & proud after this one!

One of the unluckiest riders of the day would have to have been Sam Dore who had two superb rides early beating Tom Hedley and Lee Herne in one of his outings and then unfortunately was hit from behind in his final heat when challenging for the lead in the first and second bend, sending him straight towards the fence. He bailed off the back of the bike which then cannoned into the fence and ended up in a sad state, ending his day. He would have undoubtedly made the semi finals and the way he was going would have given it a fair shake there to. Two top meetings in the row where Sam has been put out by other , having suffered the same issue in the Victorian Title a few weeks ago Must be a magnet.

Sir Lunchalot has it wrong must have been listening to the Ref because Sam had a discussion with him after the meeting. Sam was hit from behind by Beau Evans. Beau came up and apologised shortly after which was good of him but doesn't change the situation. Tom Hedley came off and everyone was watching that and no one else was watching what was actually going on with the other three riders in that heat

Fair point RFD. I was watching Tom Hedley come off and subconsciously remembered Sam being in the clear before Tom came off and that translated to what I wrote. Must admit I honestly did not see anyone make contact with Sam, therefore I didn't like to write that anyone had. The pits bend is probably the worst place on the track to see contact from the referees box and I imagine the ref was watching Tom the same as I was.

If you say that Sam was given a bump which caused him to come off then that's good enough for me. Please accept my apologies.

Uh-oh, "Sub-Conscious" again, Lunchy? :oops: Might have known it! :D

Sub-Conscious as an Endangered Parrot no doubt. ;)

You're obviously gonna need a restraining hand come Ozchamps, M8! Lucky I'm such a great (Sausage) Roll Model (Sic). :rolleyes:
