Looking at team pics from the 1969 season, apart from the Leicester team leathers the most noticeable coloured leathers belong to Alan Knapkin, Bruce Cribb, Barry Briggs and John Langfield. A few black with stripes down the side and a good smattering of Rugby/Football shirts (Coatbridge, Newport, Bernie Persson, Jimmy Squibb and the Eastbourne Eagles).

No sign of any sponsors though, apart from Ivan Mauger having Jawa on his shoulders.

Sounds like you've been doing the same as me, probably from the British Speedway Handbook! That's exactly what I found... Actually, I found a couple of pics from 1968 of black leathers with simple stripes.

In response to an earlier post, I can't recall Jimmy Mac being sponsored by Smith's Crisps (but I could be wrong), but I know Brian Collins was sponsored by Smith's in the '70's. Don't forget Ole Olsen and Soda Stream!

You're right the Speedway handbook was my source, but I also have acopy of Speedway and Short Track racing by Dave Lanning that shows a 1974 pic of Jim McMillan with the word SMITHS showing on both arms and the old Smiths Crisps logo on his leg.

Wasn't there a general superstition about not wearing green as it was supposed to be unlucky - hence Wiggy being one of only a few riders to wear it?

Seen a few pics of Ole Olsen with early sponsorship. He had an Ole Olsen-Duckhams body colour on in one of Briggos books taken in the early 70s(70 or 71 i think).Plus i have a couple of pics of not only him but Finn Thomsen with Jawa on their leathers.Maybe Finn was wearing an old pair of Ole's.They are from 73-74.Also i have a pics of Garry Middleton in 73 with Lewis(i imagine Lewis Leathers)on both arms and just underneath is what looks to be the Shell emblem.

Not so sure when Sparshott was wearing white leathers but there were quite a number with white leathers i think.Maybe not mayn with green leathers but Ray Morton had green leathers in his Wimbledon days.Seem to remember Peter Collins having very colourful leathers(often changed)during that 73-76-ish.Maybe my memory is not so good but i thought he had some with green in there as well.Sort of multi-coloured thick bands

Michael Warren used to wear green leathers with tassles, if I remember rightly.

Think you are right.I have a Hackney photo with a rider in green, but don't know who it is.Schofield,Galvin and Whittaker are in the same photo

There are a few riders who wear green here in Germany.Kevin Wölbert for one and i think Okoniewski also wears green.Might be to do with the Boll sponsorship

Right again, Iris; PC did have some green leathers, and you're right about how often he changed them also!

Don't forget that Roger Johns had some predominantly green leathers, both early and late in his career.

Might be wrong but I think Finn Thomsen used to wear green leathers as well.

Can't believe we've got through so many posts on this subject without mentioning one of the most distinctively attired riders of the 70's..... the Polka Dot Kid himself!!

Guest Steve Dixon
I remember attending the last match of the season at Sheffield I think that it was 76, and seem to remember three of the Belle Vue riders were wearing leathers that were all silver , onde was Peter Collins, but I cannot remember who the other two were.

All the Aces turned out in silver team leathers i think it was in 77, didn't last long tho
