f-s-p
... all the people going round to all the other stalls to buy souvenirs and stuff...<{POST_SNAPBACK}> You had me almost choking on my bun! Where do you get people to your club and work for your club pro bono? Children and their parents. A bit harsh, yes, but true. Taking Denmark as the opposite now... Last time I checked Denmark had 300 50cc and 80cc riders combined in the average listings. This may be a bit false so we'll take 1/3 of them away and end up with 200 juniors and their parents and families working for the clubs and getting decent to excellent training facilities in return for their kids. Last year Finland had ten 80cc riders. Of which almost half were from Lahti. They work their årses of to pay for the team and succeed in getting some facilities in return. Could/would they do it weekly or twice a month? They've said no...
f-s-p
After a week of (almost) winter weather it's now all turned to crap again in Tampere. It rained all last night and most of the 15 cm of snow is gone and temperatures will be above 0 celsius for the next few days. Our test match against Sweden is exactly four weeks away. Nordic final is supposed to be ridden in Forssa, and thats about 80 km south from Tampere. It could look better! f-s-p
It has rained practically all weekend. Some of it snow though but currently we are back above 0 Celsius again without snow here in Tampere. The weather forecast tells that it will remain above 0 for the rest of the week. It's looking really bad... The Finnish Individual ice racing final has been cancelled from next saturday. No new date yet. There goes the phone bill through the roof... f-s-p
Petri Meritähti has been appointed as the chairman of the track racing committee. Meritähti steps in for Yrjö Laukkanen. Lately he has been one of the driving forces, if not the driving force behind the new coming of the Pori club. He is also a former rider, but had a bad crash a couple of years ago at Seinäjoki. He hasn't ridden since and alltough he's made a comeback to working life he still feels the consiquenses time to time. At the same time Jyri Palomäki has been appointed as the trainer/manager for track racing. The idea originating to the un-official meeting a couple of weeks ago says that while Meritähti take's care of the administrative side of things, Palomäki will take care of the national team and rider selections as well as all the possible training sessions there might be. The intention here is to share some of the workload. And like previously reported, Mikael Teurnberg is the trainer/manager for the youngsters. So Finland is following the likes of Germany by appointing some new blood in to the manager department. There are the same pro's here as with the others. Palomäki has been around and knows people left wide and centre. He also reads this forum so I'm not saying anything else. EDIT: There's no snow or ice at Forssa either. f-s-p
Dates for the Finnish Individual and Pairs finals have been released. July 5th Individual qualifier, Seinäjoki (provisional, if needed) July 12th U21 final, Hyvinkää July 19th Best pairs, Kauhajoki July 26th Individual final, Haapajärvi August 9th Longtrack final, Forssa Next weekend a training camp will be organized by our federation for the selected group of Finnish riders at Pajulahti. Physical training with interviews and theory lessons are on the agenda. Mikael Teurnberg will be present. EDIT: A pretty good story in a smaller Finnish newspaper from Kouvola sheds some light in to the some what confusing puzzle that currently is the situation regarding Finnish speedway scene in the cabinets. Mikael Teurnberg says he has a three year deal to coach the Finnish juniors. His main goal is to plant some professionalism in to their heads starting from the basic skills such as the English language. This is something I personally am really looking forward to. Now I just need to wait a few weeks so I can get a clarification to the role of Jyri Palomäki. Of course I thought everything was clear when he was chosen for the job, but rumours are circulating... f-s-p
They have pretty much given up on the hope to organize the Nordic final at Forssa on February 10th. They might get some ice done but there's no snow. Nobody's cancelling anything yet. The un-official word is that they are trying to stage it in Oulu on the same day. What ever happens with Oulu will be confirmed with in a week. Jari Mäkinen has signed for Stal Gorzow in the Polish Ekstraleague, Juha Hautamäki for the 2nd division Opole. Mäkinen is looking forward to a very busy season. He's contracted to Sweden (Allsvenskan), Denmark (Superleague), Finland (Extraleague) and now Poland. The plan apparently is to start the season in the Polish 1st division. So far Mäkinen has turned down chances of entering the British Premier league, but if an opportunity arises during the season, he's ready to grab it. I just wonder how he'll do it, they've just managed to clone a sheep, nobody's talking about humans yet! Anders
That's right.Probably give each other most votes in the Eurovision Song contest <{POST_SNAPBACK}> What? Surely you don't mean that neighbouring countries give each other 12 points all the time? That's unheard of in the ESC! But I do seem to remember that most of the German 12 points throughout the latest years have gone to Turkey and not Austria or Switzerland for example. To steer this thread slightly back towards topic , may I just say I'm looking forward to see some Finnish riders in the Vetlanda 4TT in April. Juha Hautamäki usually provides good racing in Vetlanda and hopefully Jari Mäkinen can stay injury-free so he can make his first crack at the Vetlanda track. f-s-p
...may I just say I'm looking forward to see some Finnish riders in the Vetlanda 4TT in April. Juha Hautamäki usually provides good racing in Vetlanda and hopefully Jari Mäkinen can stay injury-free so he can make his first crack at the Vetlanda track. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The first training camp for the Finnish youngsters finished yesterday and was more or less of a success. I had a brief chat with Teurnberg yesterday and he was happy with the results. He had already seen most the the riders in action last year, but now he's also interviewed them and seen their physical condition. The plans are all on paper for the deveploment to take place and the work to start. Teurnberg highlighted that alltough the riders background and current level is various on different areas, there's a will to do the right things and improve. A training camp is scheduled for the youngsters in Sweden for 18th to 19th of May. Surprise surprise thats the Vetlanda weekend. There was a plan to enter a Finnish team in to the 4TT, but I dont know what will happen to it now that Laukkanen stepped down and Palomäki is just starting. If Laukkanen had informed the locals of the entry, I'm sure Palomäki will be more than happy to carry it through. Now for the compulsory Mäkinen part of the Finnish news... He's got training camps lined up for every weekend in March. All apparently in Poland. Will he still be in one piece for the 4TT... Thats just about the biggest challenge he faces this season. To stay in one piece until the U21 qualifier on his home track at the end of May. EDIT It seems Finland is allowing the use of 150cc 4stroke engines in 80cc speedway. Carburettor sizes are 25 mm for 80 cc and 32 mm for 150cc. Anyone know if this is happening elsewhere? There's no statement from the FIM that I know of/ to be found... f-s-p
Just as I saw it in print, it has been... cancelled Both the Finnish ice racing Championship -08 and the Nordic final confirmed for Oulu on the 9th and 10th of February have been cancelled. I personally heard the confirmation from the club chairman on monday, but they cancelled it yesterday because they cant get enough ice on the track. Funny thing is that this morning was the first winter morning as I remember them. New 10cm snow, clear sky and a few - grades celsius. There's a huge (Finnish scale) motorcycle exhibition at Helsinki starting today and lasting until sunday. I think they get around 8-10000 visitors a day. Everyone can take a guess how well speedway is on display... Havent even seen the place yet but it's a good guess. I'm not blaming anyone (anymore), the rent for the space for a speedway bike for the weekend is around 3000 €, and on top of that you would need to stay in town for almost a week and talk to people (mostly pissed people) 10 hours a day... Maybe if I get the chance I'll do it in a few years and then start blaming others again.
