colincooke
So it appears all was not as rosy as the blinkered oracle makes out, what a surprise.
Guest Schumi
And you know this to be true, do you? The plain and simple truth, so far as can be deduced from the evidence, is that Nicki P was forced out by the points limit. Thank you, honey. MFE
If the actual paying numbers were 3,000, does this mean it was a financial disaster? And if so, who has lost out, Mat Ford himself? I believe the crowd was nearer to 5k than 3k but a bit worrying that with all the excellent publicity this meeting received that we, the sport as a whole could not deliver a sell-out situation must be a bit worrying! - One reason was the complicated and costly way of purchasing advance tickets - The ticket price was acceptable, BUT £4 surcharge on EVERY ticket, plus a postage charge, was a turn-off - Poole is not in London's West End!! - Restaurant table Minimum 6 meaning 2 cars for most people, was also a turn-off - The programme was also interesting at a value of £6, pushing the boundaries to the extreme, worth £3 Maximum in todays market - Still the 60k had to be found from somewhere i suppose! Do not get me wrong i was one of the few non Poole fans applauding the Poole promotion for putting on this meet, at the start of this topic and would have gone but its about a 9-10 hour drive from Worky!! iris123
I really don't understand what all the whinging is about here! During the final, it seriously could have been anyone's race until Nicki swept ahead (as I think most expected him to do anyway!) but the other 3 it was a scare really, watching them come round the 1st/2nd bend side by side! To say that these boys were not going for it due to an agreement beforehand is stupid! Looking at the video i think they could at least have put on a better show of it if they were all getting the same money. You couldn't really call that a classic heat.So they either decide to share the money and give the public a great heat or they go all out for the win.It would have been a great opportunity to put on a real show for the media and newbies along with the fiddle Edited March 10, 2008 by iris123
Steve Shovlar
And still we have the usual mob, who did not attend trying to slag off the biggest domestic meeting of the year. Unreal. They really are that sad. The crowd was around 5,000 IMO. It was very large and fans from all over the country came to witness the biggest prize ever in UK speedway. Was the racing the best? No, but it was never likely to be. First meeting of the season, riders brushing off the cobwebs and in this class of field mistakes rarely happen. There were some processional races, as well as some very good ones. Overall the meeting was a roaring success and Poole as usual lead the way when it comes to putting on a top class event. Mistakes? Sure. Kids should have been allowed into the standing areas for a tenner. 5000 x 30 =150,000 so a healthy profit on top to buy some nice new riders. Steve Shovlar
Lets see another British club put on such a meeting. Then we can compare, as I would certainly attend it with such a field of riders.
Trees
I would agree if it was AFTER the final heat had finished and the winner had said hey guys-lets just split it,but to agree before the final heat,if that is the case, short changes the public as each rider would not have been racing for four laps to try and win £60,000 as they were led to believe. I guess it would have been best if Nicki hadn't said anything BUT I've heard of this being done loads of times and think it's a great gesture among the riders where comradarie is so important (most of the time ) So they either decide to share the money and give the public a great heat or they go all out for the win.It would have been a great opportunity to put on a real show for the media and newbies along with the fiddle Yeah you'd think they might have thought of that but obviously being the winner was pretty darned important after all Edited March 10, 2008 by Trees

Well they always risk injury. But they are 4 of the top riders in the world.Surely they could have put on a bit of a show.I mean Martin Smolinski has said about the indoor concrete floor meeting in Kiel that the idea is to put on a show, not to try and bust a gut to win.So if he can do it why not these guys? Agreed Steve, an example of excellent promoting by Matt Ford & Co. for which only a handful of clubs could aspire, maybe just Swindon & Coventry along with Poole, thinking about it, the rest would vote to have 2 lap races (or maybe 60,000 pennies) to cut costs or find some other way of cheapening our great sport! colincooke
See you at Swindon the day after cardiff Oh yes Al, now that's a sensible date, was considering Newport but may have to think again now.Depends how the rest of the guys feel. Subedei
half the crowd had gone to explore it. Maybe half the crowd guessed it was going to be a carve up between the riders and left before the final? Okay, it may well have been a great gesture by the four riders, but it just made a mockery of Matt Ford's showpiece meeting and showed contempt for the paying public. Dont be daft, it was a great piece of sportmanship from the 4 guys, and Nicki in particular, who was the obvious favourite! for what was in effect a season opener, the only mistake (maybe) was to make people aware, because they could open themselves up to ridiculous comments of mockery and contempt, whatever next! Postie Pirate
Exactly, if people were worried about not getting tickets why didn't they phone the stadium. I arrived just after 1pm, the stadium car park was full by then, the queue was a couple of hundred yards long, people were asking if anyone had any spare tickets. I would say it was easily 5000 people, especially with everyone crammed into the grandstand. The Daily Echo today says that it was a capacity 5,500 crowd. It's no surprise that the people who are slating this meeting on here are the usual Poole critics. You are right Hector. I to arrived at just before 1pm and as you say the car park WAS full....there WAS a queue.....there WERE people asking for SPARE TICKETS......This is FACT. I go to nearly all Poole meetings at Wimborne Rd and the crowd WAS most certainly close to the 5,500 set capacity. For a start the glass stand on the back straight had far more viewing from it than are usually seen in there. It sounds to me that a lot of people would take great pleasure if this meeting had been a huge failure, but it was not.....In fact far from it. I'm sure Matt was more than satisfied with the turn out and the way things went.

Because Smolinski being missing from a line-up doesn't have the same ramifications as Jonsson or Adams being out with an injury? And what do you call a bit of a show? Reports say you "could have thrown a blanket over them", suggesting it was a close race. What do you want, juggling?

Sportmanship ? i call it conning the crowd . So if speedway matches and open meetings are fixed it's ok as long as people don't find out about it .
