Cradley Heath were call "the Lukes"in the first year 1947 then changed the name in 1948 to "the Cubs" because of the riders were all young in 1949 they again altered the name to the "Heathens" hope this helps in any way

I'm also not sure about Barrow. According to the book, National League Speedway 1968-1977, the 1972 Barrow team were called the "Bombers". However, I seem to remember them being known as the "Happy Faces" due to their sponsorship from Duckham's. Can anyone confirm that their official nickname was indeed, the "Happy Faces"?

Steve

I believe it was Barrow Happy Faces in 1972 thanks to Duckhams sponsorship and Ivan Mauger

I forgive ya... Of course, I just made a faux pas also, saying 1968 instead of '69...:blink:

Oh, and Wilman70, here are some more corrections :

Romford Bombers 1968 - 1971

Middlesbrough were the "Teessiders" from 1968 - 1970, becoming the Teesside "Teessiders" from 1971 - 1973, before changing to the Teesside "Tigers" in 1974.

Teams that have been left out are :

Ringwood "Turfs" 1954

Southern Rovers 1956

Rayleigh Rovers 1957

Steve

Rochester Bombers 1969

Romford Bombers 1969-1971

Rochester Bombers 1969

Surely there was never actually a meeting at Rochester was there..??

So though this may have been the proposed name for the club (a nickname transported over to Romford where the new promotion did open up...), I don't see how this can really be listed as a club coz it didn't actually see the light of day..!!!

BL Div 2 1969 - Rochester raced away fixtures as Rochester Bombers before Romford opened

Not so, my friend. Even though they did not have a track of their own (the local Town and Country Planning Committee had previously accepted their proposal for a track, but this was eventually denied by the County Committee), the team actually rode in a number of matches, including several BL II fixtures, as Rochester. It wasn't until May that, still without a home venue, they managed to acquire Brooklands, thus becoming Romford.

Yes, you're right about Lea Bridge/Clapton. They also rode in the Second Division as The Cubs in 1938.

Walthamstow Wolves should read: 1934; 1949 - 1951.

Also Harringay Canaries 1929 - 1931

Harringay Tigers 1934 - 1939

Harringay Racers 1947 - 1954
