Fredrik Lindgren In Aussie Title

Recommended Posts

(from speedwayworld.tv)

GRAND Prix newcomer Fredrik Lindgren has accepted an invitation to compete in the 2008 Australian Championships as the third and final International competitor.

Lindgren, awarded a nominated place in the 2008 World Championship, will get an early start to his racing as he joins Joe Screen and Filip Sitera amongst the three riders competing alongside the stars from the home nation over the five-round series.

Organisers feel that Lindgren will automatically become one of the favourites, despite his unfamiliarity with the circuits, and they expect him to be battling for a podium place at least. The Swede will be bringing his regular Polish mechanic with him.

Lindgren said: "I cannot wait to arrive in Australia. I’ve heard a lot about Speedway down there and obviously the sport is strong with both Leigh (Adams) and Jason (Crump) finishing on the podium in this year’s World Championship.

"Having been confirmed as a full time Speedway Grand Prix rider just one week ago and this confirmation today, October has been a very big month for me.

"The Linddales Australian Championships will be a vital opportunity to ensure all my gear is ready to compete at World Championship level in 2008."

How many of the top Aussies aren't competing so they have to prop the series up with Europeans I wonder ?

Yer soundin' a bit like a Whingeing Pom, Lunchy!

OK we know there's no JC, no Leigh, no Rooboy. I prefer to think we're getting good value with Freddie & Filip, not to mention old favourite Joe Screen. I for one enjoyed Steady's "Crash through or Crash" style and Scotty was a huge hit with our Junior riders last year, no question too petty for him to answer.

Still leaves 13 places for our boys. By my reckoning that's two more spots for young up and comers, plus we don't know if Mark Lemon or Johnno are riding this year. Oh well, at least we'll have something to argue about! :D

Well maybe those involved with the Linddales Australian Championships should consider funding their young Australians to return home to ride rather than using any funds to bring in Brits, Swedes Poles etc. :(

It's disgusting that 3 foreigners are being paid to ride over there when the money would be better spent on getting Crump, Adams and Schlein to ride!

I don't blame them 3 for not riding the way the series is being run, especially after last seasons farce of changing the order the rounds were run costing the riders (and fans) a substantial amount of money.

Plus I think there are some long memories following the aftermath of the Gosford called off meeting 2 years ago when there were some derogatory personal remarks about certain riders made in public by one of the people involved in Power Promotions. Interesting to note how many of those riders rode last year and are likely to ride this year.

Don't worry BFD, I'll go, and I'll enjoy it, and catch up with a few people, and I'll have a few laughs just like normal. My view though is that in principle I would rather see 16 Aussies in the field. The only exception would be if they brought out a really top name or two that would pull extra people through the gates and increase the sports profile. I can only think of Hancock because he is well known out here, (maybe) Nicki Pedersen, and certainly Rickardsson when he was riding that would fit that description.

Sure this years visitors means seeing a few new faces but I don't think they will put many extra bums on seats. It may even work in reverse, say (for example) if Tom Hedley, Ryan Sedgeman, or Robert Kziesak misses out on a spot that is taken by a visitor it may well mean friends or fans who would have gone to Mildura (Tom/Ryan) or Gillman (Robert) may now not bother going.

Gees I just read that back and do sound like whinger don't I ? 44 years since I left the UK and I still can't get rid of it !!

I don't think any money would have got those three riding this year, SCB, I think after the stellar seasons they've had they deserve a break, don't you?

As for the Gosford rain-off, Lunchy, I have happy memories there 'cos I went down the local Parlour and scored the Wednesday Night Special, two for the price of one!

Looking forward to seeing Chris Holder et al taking on two excellent young guns as well as catching up with "the usual suspects"! Mine's a Crownie!

My own feeling is that the Aussie Championships should be for Aussies! Having said that, would be good to try and arrange another "Young Brits" tour Down Under such as the one that happened a few years back.

I would doubt anyone'll be disappointed with what Freddie does, he's a 100% racer for sure, well what I've seen of him anyhow!
