It's not very simple - some young riders who do speedway also race Dirt Track - on modified MX bikes, on pretty long tracks (typically 600 - 800 metres), modified ovals, always having at least one right hand bend, some are "kidney shaped", some very large "L" shapes.

So a lot of these kids (ie their parents) have several bikes, that they race at different tracks & meetings al around the countryside - for example, if a kid here ni Albury wants to race Junior speedway, they can race at Mildura 600km away, or Moe 500k, Adelaide 1000k, Gosford 650k - as well as Dirt track at home in Albury, Broadford 250k, Wagga 140k, West Wyalong 300k, Temora 250k, Canberra 400k, Griffith 275k, Mildura 600k, Cowra 500k, Newcastle 720k - get the picture? and surprisingly, not many kids do both, more do Dirt Track in the southern part of the nation than speedway.

The huge dedication, effort & expense by families & the very rare sponsor actually has the effect of making our kids very appreciative, dogged, versatile and determined to do well - not only for themselves, but as a show of return for their families and supporters efforts.

I disagree that the Junior scene is well structured - rather, there are hotbeds of dedicated, harworking zealots who love their kids and the sport, and this produces a stream of young blokes who are regularly punching above their weight on the world scene!

I think the junior scene is reasonably well structured. The main problem is lack of rides. This is why many of the kids carry on doing dirt track racing. There are just not enough riding opportunities to justify the sole expense of speedway for many families.

It does vary from State to State, however as an example someone in South East Queensland can easily ride a minimum of twice a month throughout the year, more if willing to travel 7 - 10 hours for meetings in NSW, which is enough for most families and does make doubling up on dirt track difficult and expensive. Infact I know several Queenslanders who have now dropped dirt track for that reason.

The introduction of the 350cc Jawa racing, adds an extra dimension, now kids 14-16 can ride two classes of speedway, 125cc and 350cc, this fills a big void and should keep a few of the bigger kids in the sport.

Is there much speedway in WA? The only track I could find any info about was Wanneroot

Wanneroot is actually the cry of the drunken Ozyace after a few bottles of Red.

Not to be confused with a Kangeroot, which is of course a Scotsman locked in a Cupboard. B)

Try looking up Perth Motorplex, Kwinana Beach.

Pinjar Park is the circuit in Wanneroo which has some top meetings coming up soon, the WA State Championships are being run over 2 days, 30 November and 1 December. Then a top class line up will contest the Ron Johnson Memorial, I think the date is 19 January.

Hope this helps!

Pinjar Park is also hosting the  Australian Under 16 Solo Championships 16-19 January 2008.

The Australian Under 16 Pairs will be run on the same night as the Ron Johnson Memorial.

Oh - not that far for you and Nick to go then!:P:lol:

Root Root Root for Wanneroo

You can Root a Kangaroo or a Wallaby or two
