Thanks <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Start off with Australian Motorcycles . It has a calendar, links, race reports etc. There are other Oz speedway websites and the links in that site will give you many of them
BigFatDave
And whilst on the subject, there's no Australian league, so how do the young Aussies get into the sport and become so good? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You really have to ask, Schumi? When there's miles of open space, and a kid can start tearing round on a minibike literally as soon as he can walk? Casey Stoner was riding competitively before he was 11 - then he had to make the choice between Speedway and other disciplines - our loss, MotoGP's gain! Most tracks have smaller circuits inside them and they're encouraged by a positive programme of assistance from MA, friends & parents. Of course, being Aussies they're naturally good to start with! chopper
Australia has a very good junior system, 125cc bikes on smaller tracks that has produced most, not all of the current crop of riders. There is also now a 350cc class running on full size tracks that is starting to grow, but you must be 14 to ride in this class, and most of the kids in the 15 year age bracket are riding them and showing great progress. The other way is the riders and parents spending the time and money travelling the vast country in search of regular rides. I know the Sedgys, Proctors and plenty of others really clock up some miles and any success they have is through these efforts, i would be interested to know how many kays they clock up in a year. And believe me when i say the in the next three to four years there are probably 20 or more kids coming through the system that have the potentual to make a career of speedway. sEdgY2
Aussie has got a good junior program through the 125cc machines but alot of it has 2 do with the coaching that some or most of the aussies get! And also it has alot to do with a place called mildura were most of the good aussie riders come from! P Crump, J Crump, L Adams, J Lyons, M Lemon, T McGowan, C Woodward, C Gathercole, T Hedley, K Doolan are all Mildura riders plus more! Mildura has also had 5 aussie junior champions Adams, Crump, Hawkes, McGowan and Myself. And over 10 australian Pairs champs! Other places like sidewinders in adealaide and Somersby on the central coast also have good programs in place aswell u just have 2 look at Chris Holder he came up through the somersby circiut! and Ryan Sullivan through sidewinders! And whilst on the subject, there's no Australian league, so how do the young Aussies get into the sport and become so good? <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Guest Schumi
Thanks for the replies. So, I guess it must be well publicised out there for the kids to know about speedway in the first place? Most of the people I speak to here haven't got a clue what speedway is, least of all the youngsters. Most of the people I speak to here haven't got a clue what speedway is, least of all the youngsters. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Its hardly publicised at all nationally, Schumi. You've gotta want to know anything to find anything out! That said there are a fair few Hotbeds such as Mildura , Gillman in Adelaide, Central Coast (Gosford & Newcastle), Ayr & the Gold Coast in Qld and not forgetting WA, where the local news media get right behind the sport, due in no small part to the involvement of parents & lovers of the sport, while Pay TV and now free-to-air are doing more to get involved, thanks to David Tapp and his merry band at Speedway Racing News and Chequered Flag. The resurgence of Oz internationally in the past few years in SWC and GP has heightened interest as well but there's a long way to go yet, and a fair amount of competition for Sponsors' $$$, before we get back to the halcyon days of the '70's. Be great to see the Tests revived.

BigFatDave
So no NIMBYs yipping on about noise which was there before they moved in then or objections to sounds and smells interrupting their Utopic lives? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> G'day Wabs! Happens out here too, alas, as urban sprawl catches up with the older circuits. Darwin's Bagot Speedway, where Rooboy's dad Lyndon rode sidecars, closed about 20 years ago for the same reason. Funniest thing is re Darwin Airport, which was originally in the Bush but is now in Suburbia. Its also a working RAAF Base, so every coupla years we have exercises with ASEAN countries (Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, the good ol' US of A, UnZud etc,) including Night Flying - Operation Pitch Black. All our resident NIMBYs whinge about it but they can't do a thing, should have looked at the fine print when they bought their houses! I reckon F-16's and B-52s are the sound of Freedom, meself!! Where BFD comes from the neighbours are 5 miles away so probably not!! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Sandie its not that bad, m8! Next big town (Katherine) is only 300km away! Guest Sir Lunchalot
Anybody know the line up for Mildura on Saturday? Oh to be there and Broadford on Sunday with you Lunchy mate! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Stolen from Chopper who stole it from someone else !! C Holder, J Holder, Sweetman, Dore, Bevan, Masters, Woodward, Gathercole, Sedgeman, Proctor, Stewart, North, Evans, Hedley, Gates, Anderson. Can't remember the last time I saw a Vic title with no Doolan or McGowan in it and another interesting non starter is Mark Jones. I'm not sure what Mark is / isn't up to this season. The field is nearly all U21 (13 out of 16 ?) so its very much a youngsters event this year. I'm very much looking forward to seeing Chris Holder again and he must be a warm favourite to take the title. I'm also looking forward to seeing Richard Sweetman again, he impressed me last year at the Oz U21's, plus I'll be keen to see how Cory has improved after his first season in the UK. I'll also be interested to see the results of the work they did on the track over the winter. As for myself I wasn't going to go because of the distance between Mildura and Broadford but this year the local airline has put on an early Sunday morning flight back from Mildura to Melbourne and guess who will be on it !!
