speedyguy
Where they went M. Payling. dlprezes <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Maurice 'Slant' Payling of Belle Vue. So-called by Johnnie Hoskins in late 1950s - because of the acute slope of Payling's handwriting. After Belle Vue, I recall Payling rode in the Provincial League. Sometime around 1956 I sold him my bike - for £25! Previously owned by pals Maury McDermott, who sold it on to Al Holliday before I bought it (and poodled around the tracks at practice!) http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/oldtimespeedway
star ghost
"Slant" had a regular place in the Aces line-up along with "Tink" Maynard following early days in the Belle Vue "Bubble Bouncers" second half and training school. Unfortunately he was hit by a number of injuries but was always worth watching. It always was the case that riders who were spectacular had it the hardest though

Wasn't Slant Payling injured in the race in which Tink was killed?

borobears
He rode in 1964 at Middlesbrough's Cleveland Park scoring 28pts. He was from Rotherham.
BOBBATH
Did Slant ever ride for Long Eaton-was his last season in 1964??
dantodan
Slant was one of those riders who never made much impact hence he moved from team to team. We had him in Diamonds colours (ha black and white!). There are photos of him on the 1960's part1 page of History of Newcastle Diamonds
Wessex Wanderer
Did Slant ever ride for Long Eaton-was his last season in 1964?? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> He definitely rode for Long Eaton at about that time. I remember him being very entertaining in one particular meeting for the Archers at Poole. Almost certain it was 1964 but I could be a year or two out. He was a gutsy little rider and great crowd pleaser. If I can remember him after all these years, he must have made some impact. http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/oldtimespeedway
Wessex Wanderer
Totally agree Speedyguy. I always remember him as one of the most entertaining riders in the old Provincial League. Not a big scorer perhaps but ALWAYS worth watching.
