Scarsy63
Hi, can anyone suggest what will be the best overseas GP to take my 13 year old to? We are going to Cardiff but would like to take a further trip away.

Prague is a great one as there are touristy things to do as well Whereas Bydgoszcz is all about bars and drinking and not a lot else. How easy is it to get flights, tickets and book hotels in advance? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> oops sorry. Automatic thinking when it comes to children!! Prague is easy to arrange. Lots of flights to pick from, try www.skyscanner.com. And then simple google prague hotels. There are lots of threads from last year and years gone by where you can pick up lots of tips. Try the GP threads. Hope I havent traumatised your son too much!

How easy is it to get flights, tickets and book hotels in advance?<{POST_SNAPBACK}> At his age he'll love the strip clubs in Prague Sorry Prague is cheap and easily accessible. Book early and flights can be bought for about £50-60 each. From the airport, get in an authorised taxi and it costs about £15. OR Get a 5 day transport pass (bus, tram, metro/underground) for about £7 each and then you can jump on and off the trams and the metro all weekend and get to and from the airport/centre. Depends how confident you are with regards to the local transport network. I did it by bus/tram the first year on my own before friend arrived later than night but this year 4 of us jumped in a taxi. Hotels I'm not sure, I've stayed in an apartment both times I've been. Worked out at £15/person per night, for less people it'll probably cost a bit more. Tickets can be bought on-line, you print them off and simply hand the A4 printed page over on the day. Simple! Great city too, ideal for all ages. Has the strip clubs I mentioned, the night clubs or the more sedate sports bars where it's a bit quieter for you and a younger son (I'm sure he'd not be kicked out of half the club though TBH!!!) for the night. Loads of restaurants and plenty of touristy things to do in the day. I love Prague, I've been two years running and I'm going back again. BTW, get to Tescos, you can buy beer for 10p a bottle!!! the 17p stuff is better though, worth 7p but not really worth the 70% price increase, so depends how you want to look at it
Scarsy63
I think you're right about my lad and the strip clubs he will luv it (ha ha) Might keep this one for myself though Any other ideas?
Niclas
Hi, can anyone suggest what will be the best overseas GP to take my 13 year old to? We are going to Cardiff but would like to take a further trip away. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> If you want to se really good speedway I recommend Malilla, Sweden in August. The problem with Malilla is the size of the town. If you planning to stay before and after the GP, you have to stay somewhere else than Malilla because there are just around 1700 inhabitants and the accomendation in Malilla is limited. If you coming by air, choose to fly to Nykoping and then you rent a car at the airport, and go by car to Malilla (around 230 km one way). The other GP in Sweden is located in Gothenburg, the second largest city in Sweden. There is plenty of hotels and hostels and the arena is located in centre of the city. There are lot of things to do, for example visit Liseberg, the largest amusement park in Sweden, or The universeum where you can find experimental workshops, space ships, giant aquariums with rays who love to be stroked, deadly-poisonous snakes, mountain streams and a complete, Steamy Rain Forest – complete with apes, caymens, piranhas and all. The easiest way to go to Gothenburg is to catch a a Ryanairflight from London. But the speedway in Gothenburg is usually not as good as its use to be in Malilla. So far I have visited Prague, Bydgoszcz, Daugavpils, Copenhagen and Cardiff. Daugavpils is like coming to nowhere. Nothing to do except for speedway and go to the hotelbar (where everybody seems to stay). Bydgoszcz is fun because it is Poland and speedway in Poland is always an extraordinary event, but as someone else said, more bars than culture. Prague is such a wonderful city, cheap, good beers, great food, culture and the speedway was very good. Copenhagen is like Gothenburg, the arena is in the middle of Copenhagen. The city has plenty to offer (The largest city in Scandinavia). The danes are very kind, and there is lots of local places to visit (The Tivoli, Copenhagen Zoo, Experimentarium, Denmark's Aquarium or the New Carlsberg Glyptotek). The easiest way to Copenhagen is by Easyjet from London.

Seb the Snail
Without the trauma of a wedding to organise, I definitely intend to do another overseas GP next year. August looks best, leaving a choice of Prague, Sweden (Malilla) or Latvia. I would definitely have said the former, although the racing there this season was awful. In terms of the whole weekend, however, I guess that it’s probably the easiest to organise and most interesting place to visit?
Niclas
Is the stadium near to the airport or is there more travelling to do? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It takes 13 minutes by train to go from the airport (Kastrup) to the centre of Copenhagen (If you coming directly you can go from the airport to the arena by the same train). If you plan to come few days before the event, it easy to go from the centralstation to the arena. From the central station (Copenhagen H) you can go by train to Osterport St, which take you 5 minutes and then you walk for 15 minutes to the arena (Parken). Even if there are 2 million people living in Copenhagen, its easy to walk more or less everywhere, or i you prefer, catch a bus.
Col
Of the two cities I've been to (for non Speedway related trips) I'd say I prefer Copenhagen rather than Pargue, trouble is in Copenhagen everything is ridiculously expensive! I did go to the 1991 World Speedway Final in Gothenburg, however I was a little too young to appreciate the city or it's delights. I'm fairly certain I wont be in the country for Cardiff next year So I intend on heading into Europe for a GP, Bydgoszcz assuming tickets are readily available will be my destnation for two reasons. 1. It's generally the best race track, entertainment wise. 2. I've never been to Poland before.
Diesel
I would definitely have said the former, although the racing there this season was awful. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Don't be put off by the racing this year. An hour before tapes up the track suffered possibly the heaviest rainshower I've ever seen. I was amazed the meeting even went ahead. Niclas
Don't be put off by the racing this year. An hour before tapes up the track suffered possibly the heaviest rainshower I've ever seen. I was amazed the meeting even went ahead. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> When I went to Prague three years ago, it was heavy rain both thursday and friday. The practice was cancelled and I remember Lindback was very pessimistic about the possibilities to race at all. But the track swallowed all the water and it was a fantastic competition. If you dont mind to do some extra travelling I can recommend a couple of days in Warsaw if you going to Bydgoszcz. Its a perfect oppertunity to get some polish culture. The Palace of Culture and Science is just magnificent even if I have realised the Poles dont like it, its still a part of the history and unique building. I also recommend to visit the Castle (cool building and some really nice paintings) and the old town. And then its pretty easy to go by train from Warsaw to Bydgoszcz (3 1/2 hrs). The same if you going to Daugavpils. You have to spend a couple of days in Riga. Both The Occupation Museum of Latvia and the Castle is worth to visit. The city of Daugavpils is a kind of strange experience. It like nothing to see, just visit the big hotel, have a couple of Stolichnaya and speak a lot of speedway with fans from Denmark, England and Finland, waiting for the big day to come. So dont spend to much time i Daugavpils, spend it in Riga. By train it takes 3 hrs from Riga to Daugavpils. But I have to say that me and my family are a kind of cultural nerds. We enjoy travelling, being cultural and do some more than just drink and watching speedway.
