frigbo
There was definitely a league in 1976. I seem to remember Bert Harkins competed in it (for Bakerfield or something similar). And i have Eddie Reeves and Dave Giffard in my head as having done likewise.
speedyguy
Whenever was speedway league in USA ? Anyone have any information about it ? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> There has been some debate about this recently on the yahoo site http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/oldtimespeedway It seems there was some sort of league on the East Coast around 1937. And debate has also taken place about some sort of league/team competition in 1949. The site also gives evidence that plans for an American League - including Australians Bert Spencer and Ernie Evans - was being discussed around the 1934-1935 period. andout
There have been many Speedway Leagues in USA over the years, none that have really taken off. Having said that....there is a league RIGHT NOW. Industry Hills beat Perris 37-35 in the first match. Perris beat Victorville 41-32 Other teams include LA, Riverside I don't expect too much to come from this. Otheer teams were the Ventura Sharks who Bobby Schwartz rode for. LA Sprockets that rode at irwindale had Bruce Penhall and Mike Bast. Costa Mesa Eagles had Rick Woods. San Bernardino Sizzlers made up the league with a young Dennis Sigalos and Jim Fishback in the team. The meetings had a last race that was nominated, the fans didnt warm to it as they were deprived of seeing all the favourite riders week in week out. Team racing was also tried in 72 with the Costa Mesa Lions. Bakersfield Bandits, Ventura Chargers, Irwindale Eagles.
