Trackman
Boothy Meeting Results - Posted 15 October, 2007 A good crowd was on hand to witness a night of spectacular racing, punctuated with spills, on an initially tricky track resulting from torrential rain the previous evening. The only injury was a broken collarbone, suffered by 16 year-old Aaron Stewart who clouted the fence in the first solo race and was pitched headlong across the finishing line. Prior to the commencement of the main programme, children lined the main straight and released hundreds of blue balloons in memory of Dave Booth. Mason Campton (NSW - top picture) won the Dave Booth Trophy for juniors, from a large field of riders from Townsville to Victoria. Runner-up in the final was last year's winner, Clinton Dennis (Qld), with Taylor Poole (NSW) third and Dylan Blain (Qld) fourth. Poole was first away, with Dennis briefly passing Campton, before Campton got the better of both on the second lap. Campton took a heavy tumble in his opening ride, but was undaunted by this knock. Interest centred on the first 350cc competition staged at Labrador, as eight 14 & 15 yr-olds lined up for the coveted Dave Booth Memorial Shield, won at its inaugural staging last year by then World Solo Champion, Jason Crump. In keeping with Boothy's desire for junior development, the shield is now contested by the 350s. Recently crowned 250cc Australian Dirt Track Champion, Todd Kurtz (NSW- centre picture), led the final all the way, with Taylor Poole (NSW) second, Alex Davies (NSW) third and Clinton Dennis (Qld) fourth. Davies topped the qualifying points after dropping just one point to Poole, while Kurtz had dropped points to Poole (twice) and Davies. Local whizkid Darcy Ward had an indifferent night, while Tyson Nelson riding the "Boothy Bike" had his first 350cc races and reaped the benefits of experience. Josh Munro (Vic) hit the fence and barrel-rolled quite a distance, then sprang to his feet. Taylor Poole led the rerun of that event until throwing a chain just before the chequered flag. This cost him maximum heat points. The senior solo section of 12 riders was weakened by the withdrawal of Richard Sweetman (NSW), and then Sam Masters (NSW) blowing his engine at practice before the meeting. Reserve riders were drafted in and the support solo races cancelled after Brad Alleyn fell while leading their first event, bringing down Harley Horwood and Hector Crespo. This put Alleyn's and Crespo's bikes out of action. Veteran Alan Rivett returned to the track for the first time since last year's Boothy meeting and showed he'd lost none of his ability by progressing to the final. Mitchell Davey was in sizzling form until engine failure in his last heat, and then a fall while leading the semifinal, ruined his chances. Ty Platt (NSW) blitzed the heats and went straight into the final. Joining him was Josh Grajczonek who dropped his one point to Platt. Alan Rivett and Anthony Perks (NSW) qualified for the final after Steven Reid's tapes exclusion and Mitchell Davey's spill in the semifinal. Grajczonek (bottom picture), who is developing into a Labrador track specialist, lead the final until Rivett fell on the second lap and Perks laid his bike down. Again the North Queenslander bolted in the rerun, leaving Platt and Perks to pick up the minor placings. The best race of the night saw Davey come from fourth to first, as he and Perks screamed under Ashley Cathcart 25 metres from the flag, with Dakota North in hot pursuit. daveyracing
Sorry to say but this was not true. I did not have an engine failure in my last heat. I had been participating in a touch football carnival all day friday and saturday before racing and I later in the night got tired due to this and made silly errors. I had no engine failures what so ever.

Wayne Baker
I would like to think that i wouldnt get tired as well but the arms began cramping up hanging onto the bikes. Great to see that our young kids can still keep up there other interest & sports, especially team sports that give them the opportunity to knock about with their mates, compete in a tenacious way & still enjoy themselves & the company of team-mates AND opponents - pretty much an Aussie trait. I do know that some speedway people have criticised Mtchell's involvement in other sports as not being dedicated enough to speedway, but I TOTALLY disagree. I have coeached junior & senior sports for 30 years (squash, water polo, rugby league, soccer, BMX, diving) & have helped steer teams & individuals to local & state titles, national representation through to & including World championships & Olympics (having given them a start locally, then supporting & mentoring along the way) - and EVERY ONE of these athletes has much appreciated that they got their start in a non-metropolitan area, in a reduced stress environment, that they had the chance to mix their sports & interests as kids, for as long as they could until they got to the point where they HAD to make a choice and specialise. In some instances, the sports where the administrators have pushed kids to specialise early have actually lost those athletes to other sports, at which the kids have gone on to the highest leval on the world stage. So Mitch, keep up your Touch for as long as you want - for the cross-trainong benefits, for the contact with your mates, and for the sheer fun of it!
