Real name Maury Mattingley. Good hard rider in the 60's who also brought out a new range of frames with strong looking new design headstocks above the front forks. :)

:blink::blink:

I remember Maury well, I had a couple of frames made by him, one of which ended up wrapped around an RSJ that supported the pits gate at Brafield

Maury was a quality rider, smooth and tidy if I remeber correctly. Nice guy too.

I believe Maury had the longest commute in speedway. Didn't he live in Plymouth while he was riding for Glasgow?

Still living in the Southampton area the last I heard.

Actually, now you come to mention it, he was living in Southampton then, not Plymouth...so, not much of a commute after all.

I have seen the names Maury and Morrie used for this rider. It is the same person.

He was an ex Southampton Saints rider

I have seen the same problem occur with Maury / Morrie McDermott the mainly ex Rayleigh Rockets rider

Both were Maury - not Morrie = Mattingley and McDermott. For years I had the job of typing up the heat details and pints scorers from each meeting for a speedway magazine. I remember the Southampton programmes and they always referred to Maury Mattingley.

Maury McDermott was a long-time mate of mine. I used to travel with him to some meetings and he also used to help me prepare my bike in my short-lived, ill-fated and perhaps best forgotten bid to try and race one.

Maury lived for years in Clapham and I often used to visit him. Two riders who were regular visitors to his home were Al Holliday and Pat Flanagan.

Maury is a regular at Poole, along with his wife.Although both are in their 80's,his wife normally rides their motorcycle, with Maury as the pillion.

They have helped me many times over the seasons, identifying riders from old photos.Always smiling and happy to recall the 'olden days'.

Smashing people.Such a shame to hear about his heart attack.

Maury and Rosita live about a mile from me in Cadnam, on the edge of the New Forest.

The reports of Maurice's illness, are correct, I am very sorry to confirm.

One of his former Team Mates, Jack Vallis, saw him on Tuesday of this week, and told me he is very unwell.

I was informed that he suffered a stroke, and that he is currently in Southampton General Hospital.

Some of the younger members of the forum, who may not remember Maury, may well remember his son Tony who had 3 Seasons with Exeter in the mid to late 80's.

I will try and keep the Forum informed.

Thanx very much for the info # Name Removed #-Yes it would be great if you could keep us informed re Maury Mattingly-perhaps one of his hospital visitors could let him or Rosita know that he is still fondly remembered here in forumland-a great guy. Since someone mentioned another Maury-does anyone know what happened to Maury Mcdermott who I also recall.
