An American Gp!

Recommended Posts

thats why i said to have these gps that are further away before or after the season has finished as the weather will always be ok

Well i think you must be desperate to go to Las Vegas on a holiday, but your mum won't let you unless there's speedway on over there

As boneheaded as some of the decisions with the sgp events are, i have serious doubts that they would they would stoop this low unless there was serious guaranteed local interest to justify taking everyone over there for a 3 day jaunt.

Its a little naive to rely on foreigners travelling over the to watch just because its Las Vegas and the other tourism there...

the year before there was less so what does that tell you!

they dont want to sit around from november to march!!!

You know that?Based on the fact that 3 riders done Oz and 2 of them are Australian :P

A lot of riders carry injuries through the season and put off ops until the close season,so they have time to recover.Start filling up the close season with GPs and when do riders recover?

Let's wait and see what IMG have planned for the future - as it is I'm expecting GP's in Japan, Malaysia, Oz, the Good 'Ol US of A and Dubai by 2010.

Only thing holding the sport back is the parochial attitude of some folks who think their club is the be-all and end-all. The sooner Pommyland wakes up to the 21st century the better, Elite League on one or two nights a week only.

Oh - no thank you BFD - You obviously havent met 21st Century!!!!! :o:D

I agree in principle about taking the WORLD championship outside of Europe. My only concern is how this would be funded. The majority of GP riders use their Polish or Swedish bikes on the continent and those that dont will pack off their mechanics on the Thursday with their bikes.

Stripping down two bikes and then crating and shipping them for a trip further away costs a pretty penny. That has to be take into consideration.

Having said that I think the WORLD championship is just that. :)

But you are asking a lot of a speedway rider then.He already has a packed season, with little time to spend with his family. Now you want to extend the season, the stress and strain on him?Plus holding GPs before the season started would be a bit of a lottery as they would have no form,no practice unless they extend their season even further and go out somewhere sunny and do a few weeks training

yes but the difference is that the riders will be home during weekdays. Lets say they fly to the GP on thursday and gets back home on Sunday. The rider is home from Sunday afternoon to THursday with no league commitments. Far from every rider has wife and kids.

it would cost a lot, but thats half the reason img have come in. they will be able to generate bigger sponsors and publicity

Is that a fact?Just like your fact that "a lot" already ride in Australia! It remains to be seen just what IMG can do at the mo :)

Well IMG will have to pump loads more dosh into the GPs than BSI did, I've read time and time again that the monies they pay do not even cover the riders expenses!!!!

That is what Bjarne was saying in the Danish press before the Grand Challenge last week.

iris, just carry on being negative because thats all you seem to know.

bsi took the gps to where they are now, img are going to improve things.

they are not going to come into this sport to take a backwards step!

And you just carry on with your nonsense. If riders didn't want to sit around what is stopping them all travelling over to Oz,NZ or Argentina? All you can come up with is a massive 3 riders that did that and 2 were back home for the winter :P

yeah it was only 3 riders.

but you're telling me that if they decide to have gp's during the winter break

the riders are going to refuse to ride because they need a rest.

you tell me one gp rider that would refuse that?

You said a lot already ride, when they don't

If they said they were going to hold GPs every weekend throughout the season riders wouldn't refuse. But they wouldn't be able to keep a high standard of performance up.Other things would be dropped from the calendar.More club meetings would be missed. And where do the riders earn their money? In the various leagues. And it is the fans who suffer as well as the riders. If IMG are so great as you say, then pay the riders a proper wage so they don't have to bother with league racing.Fact is they can't.And do you doubt that sportsmen need time to rest and recuperate.Time for ops and time for rehab?

no i agree that the riders need time to recover.

i'm not talking about having extra gp's during april to october.

i'm saying that they will bring in a couple during the winter break.

i'm also not saying that img are great. they have come in to take things further.

i would hate to see any league racing suffer due to gp's.

i started this topic to see what people thought about a possible idea of an american gp for a bit of fun.

i think it would be a cool place to take such an event, don't you agree?

Well i am not against a GP in the States.Only yesterday seeing what appears to me to be the decline of Hancock i was saying it is sad to see no new Americans on the horizon that will be competing at the top.It looks like a 30+ year era of American riders bringing something special to the the speedway world is ending. It is a pity, but the world moves on and if there isn't enough interest after all these years of having top riders ,i can't see why there will be much interest in the future without a top local rider.

And that's why Postlethwaite was able to delude the masses as to the "success" he was making of the GPs - he got the riders for a pittance. If the GPs had to pay the riders a decent amount, they'd crash and burn. At the minute the GPs are essentially subsidised by the various leagues paying the riders.

ahem... "mate" ... i'm grown up fine thank you, and have travelled all over the world to watch gp's and other meetings.

There will defintely be a gp in malaysia soon, as no doubt there will be a russian one too as the sponsorship and local interest will merit it.

Where are "these types of places" you're referring to then? Some cloud-cuckoo idea of it going to Vegas is so way off the mark it is unreal. Why don't they have one at EuroDisney - now that really would attract the tourists ? :P

Anyway...keep coming up with the ever so funny posts... you're doing a great job at sounding very well informed so far

But Doctor - just make sure your travel insurance is world wide and not just euro. We wouldnt want to take any chances now would we!!! :o:D
