Ullevi Gothenburg Gets Gp 2008

How can they guarantee its not going to rain though? Temporary tracks can't cope with the rain.

Maybe semi-temporary tracks can. This one will be laid in November and finished in March, they say. So should be good in May. Ofcourse, no guarantee against torrential downpours but all tracks will struggle with those.

BSI Speedway, right holders of the FIM Speedway Grand Prix Series (SGP),

and GotEvent, operators of Ullevi Stadium, Gothenburg, have confirmed

World Championship speedway will return to Sweden's national stadium in

2008, with a new semi-permanent speedway track being built as part of

the deal.

A three year contract has been signed by both parties and the 2008 FIM

Swedish Speedway Grand Prix will take place at Ullevi on 24 May.

Paul Bellamy, Managing Director, BSI Speedway commented: "The Series

currently visits internationally renowned stadiums in Britain

(Millennium Stadium), Denmark (PARKEN) and Germany (VELTINS-Arena) and

we are delighted Ullevi stadium joins this growing list.

"By installing a semi-permanent track, Ullevi stadium have shown how

committed they are to the SGP Series. We have been working very closely

not only with the stadium, but also FIM Race Director Ole Olsen and his

track building team to ensure the surface prepared at the arena will be

first class and we are looking forward to a great night of racing on 24

May 2008."

Construction of the new track will start in November 2007, as Ullevi's

Stadium Manager, Anders Albertsson, explained: "Plans are in place to

start construction of the semi-permanent track in November this year.

It will be ready and tested in Spring 2008 and will be used to stage

speedway meetings leading up to the Grand Prix on 24 May. During the

concert and athletic season (June - August) the shale will be

temporarily stored and brought back to the stadium in early September

each year when the track building will commence again.

"Speedway has a long heritage at Ullevi and we hope this will continue

for many years to come."
