Adams Last Year?

Recommended Posts

I get the feeling that he is seriously think about not competing in the Grand Prix next year, tonight he spoke alot about his young family, and this could well have a big bearing on what he decides.

I am sure that he misses the wife and kids when he racing, and his schedule must not leave him to have much quality time with the family, and if not competing in the Grand Prix will give him the chance to do so.

Have to say though that if he does reitre from the Grand Prix series then it will be a shame, becuase on his day Leigh can beat any rider in the series, and has prove that this season, with the exception of Nicki Pedersen.

Don't think 2008 will be completely Adamsless, but do think he'll step down from the GP's and will ride maybe just the UK & Polish leagues.

Never mean't that he would retire from speedway full stop, but just the Grand Prix, so he will be able to spend more time with the family.

There are more hints of Leigh possibly retiring in the Swindon Advertiser HERE.

The Australian has seen his future in speedway discussed at length throughout the season, and he admitted that, at 36-years-old, he could be tempted to retire from Grand Prix racing after tonight.

"I need to cut back somewhere but haven't decided where that would be.

"So this could be my last Grand Prix.

He was asked again in the press conference after the GP and said the same.He would think about it over the winter. Also seems that neither Leigh nor Jason will be competing in Australia this winter. He seemed a bit down in the press room, but then AJ wasn't exactly ecstatic and he had just won the $100,000 :D

Next year it will be $200,000,so maybe the winner will be a bit more excited :D

£100,000 hey on the last GP, what is the point of that, it all goes to one rider, why not spread the money out throughout the year?

They seemed down did they, yeah they'd just had to suffer racing on a rubbish track, their dreams and ambitions are in the hands of a company who don't care what they're racing on as long as they are making money!

From what i understand the $200,000 will be decided over 4 meetings. The 4 temporary tracks. So almost a mini-GP within the GP

So the £100,000 will be on top of the money they earn from these 4 GP's, a bonus for racing well and managing not to fall off on the mighty unpredicatable tracks?

$200 000 for the indoor champion is an absolutely crap idea. Imagine what could happen on the last GP:

1. AJ wins the final meeting, gets the usual sum of money (which is not that great)

2. NP is world champion, gets the trofee and medal and nothing else

3. Indoor specialist wildcard John Doe wins the first indoor meeting as a wildcard and then consequently are invited back for the three others (which he wins) and gets $200 000 for his efforts.

Crap. Money should be given to all the riders over the series or to the World Champion at the end of the year.

An update on Leigh's intentions from today's "Evening Advertiser"...

Good news for both the Robins and the GP Series by the look of it. :approve:

Swindon Robins captain Leigh Adams is targeting one last crack at speedway's world title - but only after a complete break from the sport this winter.

Adams, who is close to securing a new Robins deal for next year, is expected to confirm his participation in the 2008 World Championship shortly. Speculation had been rife for months that 2007 would be his last season in speedway - but the 36-year-old Australian superstar looks certain to be racing in Europe again.

The good news for Robins fans is that their second top all-time scorer should also be back to lead Swindon. And, after four months off - he will not not try to extend his record-breaking run of 10 Australian title wins - Adams will also try to improve on his runners-up spot to Nicki Pedersen in this year's Grand Prix series.

"We have the right package almost in place for my last season for sure," he said.

"But if I win then we would have to reassess things again. I have always said I would never ride in it to make up the numbers and felt like bailing out this year but it has been a very constructive season for me. We are still in the process of sorting everything out but we are 95 to 99 per cent sure I will do it again next year. Everyone has been very supportive, particularly the sponsors and it is all coming together pretty well.

Adams revealed he and Swindon co-owner Terry Russell were putting the finishing touches to a deal to bring him back to Blunsdon for 2008.

"I can't see a problem Terry and I are pretty close to a deal," revealed Adams. "Swindon is in my heart like all my teams Leszno (Poland) and Masarna (Sweden) - as far as I am concerned they are like family to me you know. How can I put it - I have total respect for the towns and have done a deal everywhere except England. We are very close to clinching a deal so I can't see there being any problems. I hope to be back next year.''

The Robins captain enjoyed possibly his best season ever in 2007 topping the averages in England and Sweden, was second in Poland and of course was world runner-up.

Adams was forced on the sidelines for 10 days after a horror crash at Reading involving Travis McGowan, Andrew Moore and himself after Racers' McGowan lost control in heat 11 of the KO Cup semi-final.

He added: "What people forget about is I went down hard in the Reading match. It knocked me around and knocked the guts out of me. To be fair I wasn't really fit enough, only about 90 per cent going into the play-offs and everything. I came back pretty quickly and I think I did a pretty good job but I am still not a 100 per cent fit. So when I go back home I will have a look at things. I will have an MRI scan on the shoulder and see what happens, we may need an operation. I have ridden with it strapped up since the crash and feels fine but it is still in the back of my mind. It is a relief to get the season over with and go back home to Australia. I will not be riding at all during the winter and not taking part in the Aussie Championship."
